  • Quiet, adults-only bush camp with mountain views in the wild Transkei
  • Nqancule River walks nearby; cliff caves to explore
  • Off-grid wild campsite with breakfast and dinner available
When you want to get far away from modern-day life in the Eastern Cape, you could do a lot worse than pitch up at Transkei Rural Escapes. Rural this place surely is; a simple bush camp set in wild countryside with spectacular views to the meandering Nqancule River. Peaceful it most definitely is, and things will stay that way too, as the site is for adults only. The site offers fresh air, fresh water from the ground and near silence interrupted only by the whistling of birds. There are caves to explore nearby, access to hiking trails right from the pitches and mountainous backdrops all around the jumbo-sized pitches. Facilities-wise, the list is short. This is wild camping at its wildest, with no electricity, light or showers. However, breakfast and dinner can be provided on request. Local breakfast dishes include mabele sour porridge, steamed or baked bread with organic eggs and tripe. Local dishes served for dinner might be pap/samp stews with seasonal vegetables and chicken, lamb or goat. Due to the rural location of the site, the owner can meet guests in Mbabakazi village (five minutes’ walk), and transport is provided from there. Pickups can also be arranged from Ngcobo (half an hour by car) or Mthatha (40 minutes).
