Start with the big hitters in the city – wander along the banks of the Ljubljanica river to Prešeren Square, run back and forth across the Triple Bridge and ride the funicular up to the hilltop castle (or hike up the path for 20 minutes or so – fret not, there’s a café at the top...). After you’ve taken in the main sights, perhaps you might fancy a canoe or paddleboarding trip on the river, a mind-bending wander round the Museum of Illusions or an evening hanging out with the city’s hip young things over in Metelkova Mesto? Plenty of comely restaurants are along the water's edge for idle nights by the river afterwards; for street food during the day, an absolute must is burek from the Ljubljana Central Market. (Ljubljana is rightly famed for its cuisine and several food and wine tours, tastings and classes are available around the city.) It’s also a cinch to leave the urban behind and head off on day trips to see more of the country – with a drive of an hour or so you can be hiking, horse riding or rafting in the Triglav National Park, gawping at gorgeous Lake Bled or Lake Bohinj, or heading underground at the Škocjan Caves.
