The whole family can have a fun-packed day on the waterslides at Aqua Park Doljevac (five minutes’ drive), where there are all splash fountains and shallow pools for novice swimmers. You can also go fishing on the lake at Jezero Malošište (10 minutes), or take long rambles along the banks of the South Morava River (five minutes). If you’re big into history, Korvingrad (10 minutes) is a ruined medieval fortress standing proud over the river; it has stunning views across the Nišava plains. You can also pay your respects to the dead of World War II at Park Bubanj (15 minutes), where there are concrete Brutalist sculptures and a white-marble memorial wall. For more heritage sightseeing, head for the city of Niš (25 minutes) to check out the Skull Tower, erected by the Ottomans and studded with human skulls, and tour the well-preserved Red Cross Nazi Concentration Camp. After that, you might need a pick-me-up, so find a traditional kafana tavern and tuck into the region’s favourite burek (savoury filled pastries).
