  • Sports courts and swimming pool; petting zoo and outdoor cinema
Just imagine pitching up on pitches shaded by centuries-old trees amid the silence of the forest. Somewhere laidback and low-key, family-friendly and yet with plenty for everyone to do? Sounds like somewhere you’d like to be? You probably should be heading for Slaughter Hostel, just outside the quiet town of Doljevac in south-eastern Serbia’s Nišava District. This is simple, back-to-nature camping on a property that’s fenced and secured by 24-hour video surveillance; you can pitch up wherever you want under the shade or in a sunny meadow, and during your stay you’ll hopefully have clear nights when you can try to count the stars dancing in the skies. Your day-time hours may well be taken up by playing volleyball, basketball and football, or by having a couple of sets of tennis – and when you run out of energy, it’s time for a cooling dip in the pool. The whole family will probably fall in love with the friendly ponies in the petting zoo, and for evening entertainment, there’s a high-definition screen for showing films outdoors. There are a few rules and regs to make life on site that bit sweeter: please be quiet between 11pm and 7am so other guests can sleep soundly. Secondly, please dispose of all your rubbish in the dedicated recycling bins, and finally, while your dogs are welcome on site, please keep them under close control.

Local attractions

The whole family can have a fun-packed day on the waterslides at Aqua Park Doljevac (five minutes’ drive), where there are all splash fountains and shallow pools for novice swimmers. You can also go fishing on the lake at Jezero Malošište (10 minutes), or take long rambles along the banks of the South Morava River (five minutes). If you’re big into history, Korvingrad (10 minutes) is a ruined medieval fortress standing proud over the river; it has stunning views across the Nišava plains. You can also pay your respects to the dead of World War II at Park Bubanj (15 minutes), where there are concrete Brutalist sculptures and a white-marble memorial wall. For more heritage sightseeing, head for the city of Niš (25 minutes) to check out the Skull Tower, erected by the Ottomans and studded with human skulls, and tour the well-preserved Red Cross Nazi Concentration Camp. After that, you might need a pick-me-up, so find a traditional kafana tavern and tuck into the region’s favourite burek savoury-filled pastries.
