Tucked into the hills of Hunedoara County in West Romania, Camping OR is a family‑run hideaway designed for nature lovers, explorers or indeed anyone longing to slow down. It sits in greenery just outside the farming village of Bucureșci, and is centred on a traditional wooden barn now restored with a shared kitchen and living space, plus fridges, freezers and a washing machine in the simple kitchen. Oh, and stunning Apuseni Mountains views in all directions…
When on site, you’ll feel the warm strength of Romanian hospitality: the owners bake sourdough bread daily (and are happy to show you how to achieve the perfect loaf), host wood‑fired pizza nights and share local foods along with honey from their own bees and the secrets of their regional traditions.
For a further glimpse into local culture, there are several museums within 20 minutes’ drive, and you can walk up to monasteries and chapels in the forested hills – slow tourism at its best. And after a day of adventuring, you can have a refreshing dip in the small pool or soak in the traditional, wooden hot bath while admiring views of the surrounding peaks.

Local attractions
You can learn the backstory of the region’s gold-mining industry through the traditional tools and mining artefacts on display at the Muzeu Mineral Toda (10 minutes’ drive), and see examples of gold ingots and ore at the Gold Museum Brad (15 minutes). Afterwards, visit Roșia Montană (an hour), where the hillside has been mined for gold since ancient Roman times.
Tour the formal water gardens and church at Crișan Monastery (25 minutes), which was completed in 1992 and has ethereal frescoes of the saints covering its interior. Find out more about every-day rural life in Transylvania at the Muzeul Achim Emilian (35 minutes), where thatched cottages, windmills and a chapel have been carefully rebuilt.
If you’re after bracing mountain air and long walks, hike the challenging riverside route in Cheile Glodului gorge (35 minutes), or follow trails rich in fossils on the Masivul Vulcan (40 minutes). It’s also worth finding your way to the vast natural cave at Podul Grohot (45 minutes). For a complete change of pace, take an exhilarating drive up the TransApuseana Road (an hour) as it switchbacks its way through the Trascău Mountains.
