  • Quiet family site on the Drăgan River between Oradea and Cluj-Napoca
  • Bologa Fortress 15 minutes’ drive; Barajul Drăgan Reservoir 25 minutes
  • Direct access to forest walks; local produce sold in Valea Drăganului
Located in the village of Valea Drăganului halfway between Oradea and Cluj-Napoca in Transylvania, Alegria Camping is tucked away from traffic and peaceful by both day and night. A small family-run site, it’s on the banks of the Drăgan River (there’s no risk of flooding as the land is protected by a dam), where families can have all sorts of adventures and fun. The plots are grassy, flat and accessible to all vehicles; the soil is very sandy so – regardless of the weather – you won’t get your car stuck or covered in mud either. There are two access points (one wider than the other) from paved roads, so you should have no problem getting to your leafy, partially shaded grass pitch. The site offers lots to visitors, including activities for kids, nature walks and stargazing on clear nights. It also has all the necessary facilities for a relaxed stay, including spotless modern shower blocks for men and women; when things get busy in summer, unisex wooden toilets and showers are also available. Other utilities include a dish-washing area with hot water, a covered gazebo for dining and socialising, wifi and internet access. Your security on site is also taken care of, thanks to 24/7 video surveillance. Dogs are most welcome to join you at Alegria Camping, with the proviso that they are kept on a lead around the pitches, and – more importantly – that you pick up after your pets.

Local attractions

If you need to pick up basic supplies, there’s a shop in Valea Drăganului within 10 minutes’ walk, and if you don’t feel like cooking, you can pick up classic Romanian dishes as takeaways from the local food stand about 20 minutes’ stroll away. If you’re after restaurant-standard food, a couple of local options will deliver straight to your pitch. To learn more about Romanian heritage, you can explore the mighty hilltop castle at Bologa Fortress (15 minutes’ drive) for free; it may not be Dracula’s Castle but you’ll have spectacular Vlădeasa Mountain views from the restored ramparts. Still functioning, Bologa Water Mill (also 15 minutes) once ground grain and may date back to the 16th century. When you’re looking to spend some time in unspoilt countryside, Barajul Drăgan reservoir (25 minutes) has plenty of shoreline walks and bike rides; there are spectacular views over the water from the landmark dam. Looking for a more challenging hike? Clamber through forest up to the Cascada Vălul Miresei (Bride’s Veil Waterfall) in the Apuseni Mountains from the car park (50 minutes).
