  • Peaceful Bistrița-Năsăud site with stunning Rodna Mountains views
  • Rodnei Mountains National Park about an hour’s drive
  • Gazebo kitchen and communal firepit; access to hiking and cycling
Experience the utterly peaceful vibe at Casuta Zen Fiad, 20 minutes’ drive from the rural hamlet of Păstrăvăria Fiad in Bistrița-Năsăud, Transylvania. It’s accessed by an unmade forest road (you don’t need a four-wheel drive though), and once you’re there, the silence is pretty absolute: no traffic, no crowds, just clean mountain air, the rustle of wind in the trees and birdsong. Everywhere on site shares the same spectacular views over the surrounding pine forests and Rodna Mountains peaks. For those of you working remotely, there are dedicated desks and high-speed wifi to make your experience seamless. If you’re there to commune with nature, cook alfresco and meet new people, there’s a communal gazebo kitchen, styled with traditional and colourful Romanian textiles and rugs, as well as a firepit for cosying up around after a day of hiking or cycling in the mountains. The roster of amenities also includes modern showers and loos. Local food sampling can be organised on site for a real taste of Romanian flavours, and there are numerous hikes and cycle rides straight from the pitches.

Local attractions

You can join walks and bike rides in the Rodna foothills straight from the site, but if you’d like more of a challenge with your exploring, Rodnei Mountains National Park (about an hour’s drive) reveals alpine meadows, glaciated valleys and jagged peaks. You can hike up to dramatic waterfalls at Cheilor (an hour and a half), and there are limestone caves to explore at Peștera Furcituri (an hour and 40 minutes). Maramureș Mountains Natural Park (an hour and 15 minutes) also offers up stunning scenery, as well as vintage steam train rides from Mocanita (an hour and 10 minutes) through forest, alongside lakes and into the Carpathian Mountains. For a taster of Transylvanian religious heritage, seek out the Byzantine-style Salva Monastery (50 minutes), and admire the golden iconostasis at Bichigiu (45 minutes). Go further afield to see the ornate Eastern Orthodox monastery at Rebra and its spellbinding mountain setting, or visit its modern counterpart with a traditional wooden church at Cormaia (both an hour and a half).
