Off to the Algarve? Wend your way west for a remote and peaceful pine forest stay at Parque Orbitur Sagres,, on the very south-western tip of continental Europe. Although it's a serene site in the middle of a forest, Parque Orbitur Sagres is well placed for shops, bars and seafood restaurants, at the small town of Sagres around a kilometre away. The beaches in Sagres are also hailed as some of the best surfing ones in Portugal, so finding surf schools and surf kit rental is a cinch; you could also get stuck into a deep sea fishing trip from Sagres harbour, tackle the hiking and cycling trails nearby, or have a peaceful day exploring the wildlife haven of Cape St Vincent Natural Park. Parque Orbitur Sagres is at the far western tip of southern Portugal's Algarve. It has bike hire and a play area, a games room, free wifi and a restaurant and takeaway. Baths, showers, toilets and a washing-up area are also available.

Liked Rustige locatie, puur natuur in het bos. Locatie was op het uiterste zuid-westelijke punt in Portugal, waar het echt heel stevig waaide. Top plek voor surfers en een leuk stadje met een paar lekkere restaurantjes en bars.

Liked Restaurants was good. Good service, nice food, good portions. Loads of toilets and showers and pretty clean.

Disliked Couldn’t sit outside for the amount of mosquitoes that were there. We literally sat outside for 15 minutes and all 4 of us had at least 20 mosquito bites. We fled inside, had dinner at the restaurant, went to bed and left as soon as we woke up.

Local attractions

This is remote Portugal, on the extreme south-west of continental Europe and the country's Algarve, in a place of surfing and sands, seafood and fishing. The beaches of Praia da Mareta, Praia do Tonel, Praia da Baleeira and Praia do Beliche are about three kilometres from the site. Potter about a kilometre from the main town square of Sagres past the seafood restaurants to get to its port and marina for a scenic walk and sunbathe, or challenge your hiking self to a ramble around the cliffs and coastline, such as to the wildlife haven and spectacular scenery of Cabo de São Vicente or Cap St Vincent, a kilometre from town. You should see several bird species including Boneli's eagles, falcons, kites and herons nesting on the cliffs at the cape, close to the land's end landmark (the cape was known as the 'end of the world' in medieval times) of the Lighthouse of Cabo de São Vicente. It's one of the most powerful lighthouses in Europe and has long been the point of return for sailors and adventurers returning from Africa and the Americas. The lighthouse is in the Cape St Vincent Natural Park, a protected reserve that's also the site of prehistoric, Roman and Phoenician remains. Wander the coast, cliffs, wildflower meadows and pine forests to see species such as otters, badgers, Egyptian mongoose and wild boar, among colourful plants including orchids, honeywort and the rare shrubby violet.
