  • Wild site at an Algarve horse sanctuary 20 minutes’ drive from Lagos
  • Barão de São João 15 minutes’ walk and Praia da Luz 10 minutes’ drive
  • Off-grid pitches on an eight-hectare property; horse walks available
If you’d like to get completely off grid and do some good at the same time, consider booking in at State of Being, a wild camping site on the edge of rural Barão de São João in the Algarve. This eight-hectare property is also a sanctuary for rescued horses, and every cent raised through the campsite goes to their upkeep. The site owners live completely off grid, and the vibe on the property is definitely laidback – it’s as calming for guests as it is for the horses, who are free to roam and graze during the day. In the evenings, they stay in a paddock in front of the parking area, so you can see them at rest too, and three times a week they are walked on loose reins around the grounds – if you have the chance, you’re welcome to join them on their adventures. As befits a wild site, the list of facilities is short. Electricity is only available during the day when the sun is shining, and there is access to groundwater, a small compost loo and two showers.

Local attractions

As well as the thrice-weekly holistic horse walks at the sanctuary, you can also book in for seven-day retreats spent getting to know the animals and taking breathwork workshops. If you’re going it alone without the horses, you can follow walking trails through the Barão de São João National Forest (direct access from the site), with its mix of native cork oaks and eucalyptus trees. The slightly boho white village of Barão de São João (15 minutes’ stroll) rewards a visit with its street art, sculpture trails and intriguing flea market on the last Sunday of every month. It’s also got a good choice of lively restaurants featuring local cuisine. For a complete change of pace, you can catch the hourly bus service down to Lagos (20 minutes’ drive) on the Algarve coastline to explore its historic heart, discover the rock stacks around Ponta da Piedade and kickback on its golden sands. Praia da Luz (10 minutes) is also a gorgeous spot with a seafront promenade lined by seafood restaurants.
