  • Peaceful campsite 10 minutes’ drive from Peneda-Gerês National Park
  • Vila do Gerês 15 minutes’ drive and Termas do Gerês 20 minutes
  • Tree-shaded pitches; communal barbecues; e-bike rental available
Hiking trails to waterfalls, spectacular views to rugged hills and easy access to the Peneda-Gerês National Park – all this is yours when you plump for mountain and woodland adventures at Ermida Gerês Camping. Family-run since 2011, this small campsite is five minutes’ drive from the sleepy hillside farming village of Ermida, set amid leafy green landscapes in the untamed Braga region. Pitches for motorhomes and tents (electric hook-ups optional) sit under a canopy of trees, so you’re sheltered from the sun during the heat of the day, yet have a crafty window seat for colourful sunsets on clear evenings. Forest and hill hikes abound straight from the pitches, or you can rent an e-bike for daytime expeditions into the Gerês hinterland. When you’re done exploring out and about, come back to base camp for showers in spotless modern facilities and a laundry service so you can catch up on the housekeeping. Then it’s time to wind up your evening chilling around the communal barbecue. Got a problem or need some sightseeing/hiking advice? The friendly campsite team will soon put you on the right lines.

Local attractions

When you’re eager to get out into nature, head for trails through Peneda-Gerês National Park (10 minutes’ drive), which lead to stunning waterfalls including Cascata do Arado, where you can have a dip in refreshingly cool water, or Cascata de Fecha de Barjas (both around 50 minutes’ walk), another popular swimming spot reached via a steep trail. Follow way-marked paths through cedar and birch forest up to Miradouro da Pedra Bela (an hour and 10 minutes) for views across the lakes and valleys of the national park. On lazier days out, have an amble around the pastel-coloured riverside houses in pretty Vila do Gerês (15 minutes’ drive) before settling down in a terrace restaurant to lunch on robust regional cuisine. When a special treat is called for, lounge under the relaxing natural hot springs at Termas do Gerês (20 minutes). Pampering attended to, it’s time for some culture. Peek inside the much-restored Church São Bento da Porta Aberta (25 minutes) to see its gilded altar and swathes of tiles depicting biblical scenes. Another important religious landmark is the ninth-century Mosteiro de Santa Maria das Júnias (90 minutes), in a photogenic valley setting surrounded by mountain peaks.

Electric optional gravel and sand tent pitch (small)

Never again.

Electric optional gravel and sand motorhome pitch

Liked It was rather clean but no toilet paper in the toilet and showers too few.

Disliked We arrived late as we traveled 3000 km we had one hour delay. Since I knew about it I was trying to contact the camping but no one one answered my calls about 50 phone calls we did. I tried to e-mail them and got one sentence reply. When we arrived the manager reluctantly let us in the camp yard complaining about mostly everything. Apparently pitch up information about checking it anytime was wrong.

The crew is very nice…

Electric optional gravel and sand tent pitch

Liked Wonderful place in a beautiful location. The camping is not huge (which is good), and offers excellent facilities. Large tent spaces (also including vip tents, which are raised from the ground and covered by a protective structure), and bungalows. Very clean toilets, and a snack-bar/restaurant which is very confortable. Within walking distance you have at least a restaurant and a mini market, and a trekking paradise to explore. Extremely nice owner, that really loves his work and loves to make you feel good!

From the manager: Thank you so much for your kind words! It truly makes our day to hear you enjoyed your camping experience. We're so grateful you chose to stay with us, and we hope to welcome you back again soon!

Best Regards,
Ermida Gerês Camping Team.
