It's free, quick and easy!
- Spacious pine-filled park 15 minutes' walk from São Mateus
- Within walking distance of a beach, birdwatching reserve and ferries
- Barbecue area, dining room and kitchen with woodburning oven
It’s a bit of a gorgeous island, is Graciosa – that’s part of the reason why the good folk at UNESCO have designated it a Biosphere Reserve (along with its Azores cousins Corvo and Flores).
If volcanic vistas, a lava cave, thermal baths, hikes, scuba diving and birdwatching appeal, pitch up at Parque de Campismo do Pinheiro for a handy place to get out and see it all. Officially this peaceful site resides in the parish of São Mateus, but the locals know the local town better as Praia (yup, that means beach… which is always a promising start...). Getting here’s pretty straightforward, as the woodland site’s an easy 15-minute walk (or couple of minutes’ drive) from the ferry port.
Walk back to town in the same amount of time for amenities including restaurants and a bakery; more shops, supermarkets and the like are 10 minutes’ drive away in the island’s main town of Santa Cruz. Self-catering supplies sorted, it’s back to base to cook up meals at the barbecue area or in the communal kitchen (try out the woodburning stove if you’re up for real rural catering), then serve them on the outdoor picnic tables or under cover in the cosy dining room.
Space and shade are in plentiful supply here, and the park’s also got a good list of handy amenities including free wifi, a launderette (volcano scrambling can get messy, you know…) and a family-friendly bathroom block.

Local attractions
Island explores should surely start with a stroll around São Mateus, 15 minutes’ walk away. History buffs can take in churches from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries and make their way around several mills; those with more of an eye for the natural world can instead hit the beach or settle down with binoculars for a bit of birdwatching.
The island’s big draw is the Furna do Enxofre volcano, 10 minutes away by car. Climb the old stone staircase to get to the huge underground lava cave (with subterranean lake), then hike your way around the Volta a Caldeira trail for stunning views over to the other islands. Once you’ve stretched your muscles, soothe them with a soak in the thermal waters at Termas do Carapacho (10 minutes’ drive).
The volcanic views stretch underwater too, and divers can go down into the depths to check out the caves, aquatic arches and reefs (plus the local marine life, of course…). If you’d rather stick to the surface, a sailing centre in Praia can sort you with boat tours, fishing trips or paddleboards to pootle around on.
