Local attractions

The area around Casa de la Permacultura is stunning – with particular rewards for those who are fond of waterfalls. Take your pick from the area’s many cascades for a walk (and a dip in some cases: Catarata Río Tigre (half an hour’s drive) is one of the closest, but you may also like to fit in trips to Catarata Cueva Blanca (an hour and 10 minutes), Catarata Anana (an hour and 20 minutes) and Catarata La Bruja (an hour and a half). If you’re short of time or don't want to navigate alone, you can join organised tours from Oxapampa (10 minutes). Some focus on nature expeditions, visiting viewpoints and saltwater pools while others will introduce you to native communities such as the Yanesha and Ashaninka, or take you to Villa Rica to learn about the area's coffee and chocolate production. It's worth spending a bit of time in Oxapampa too – it was founded by Austrian and German settlers in the 19th century, so it’s got some intriguing European-style architecture.
