You’ll certainly want to bring your bikes when you come to Goeree-Overflakkee – the island has a fabulous 265 miles of cycle paths taking you to all corners, including some of the outer dykes that are closed to other traffic. You don’t have to go far to see some lovely sights either – especially in spring, when the surrounding fields burst forth with colourful tulips. Watersports can certainly be on the schedule too – nearby Lake Grevelingen is the largest saltwater lake in Europe and places like Grevelingendam Beach (15 minutes’ drive/40 minutes’ cycle) are great for sailing, kayaking and windsurfing. You can also go scuba diving here or look out for the colonies of flamingos and seals. For a more relaxing time you could try the beaches in  Den Bommel (five minutes’ drive/15 minutes’ cycle) or Haringvliet (10 minutes’ drive/20 minutes’ cycle). Adding something different to the mix, you may like to take the kids to see the animals at Faunapark Flakkee (15 minutes’ drive) or learn about the story of the 1953 flood at Watersnoodmuseum (25 minutes). For city life it’s a 40-minute drive to the centre of Rotterdam.
