- Wildlife on site; direct access to walks along the Leijgraaf River
Need to hit the stop button? Camperplaats De Vleu might be just what you’re looking for. Found 10 minutes’ drive from Uden in North Brabant, this peaceful, adults-only spot sits on the edge of De Maashorst nature reserve, bordering the Leijgraaf River – it’s a region of ever-moving dunes and forest rich in wildlife, and just the place for keen observers of nature. And if you don’t want to wander too far from your pitch, there’s a badger’s sett nearby and a swallow wall at the back of the site’s pond.
Spacious pitches are all fully serviced and accessed on paved tracks; there is plenty of greenery around and a steep artificial sand bank provides shelter from any wind. The roster of amenities is not overlong, but there are showers and loos, and coffee is served at reception as well. Anything you need in the way of food, you can source in Uden, and there are a scattering of restaurants and cafés there too.
While children are not part of the remit at Camperplaats De Vleu, dogs certainly are. There’s a dedicated off-lead field, and loads of river- and pond-side walks directly from the pitches, so no-one (not even your dog) will go short of exercise.

Local attractions
The primeval landscapes of De Maashorst nature reserve (10 minutes’ drive) make for superb hiking among the Bedaf drifting dunes, heathland and woodland. Fauna-wise, you can expect to see Exmoor ponies grazing alongside black Tauros cattle, and perhaps the occasional carefully protected bison. Badgers, foxes and butterflies are common sightings too, so remember to take binoculars with you.
Cyclists can whizz down flat paths towards Bernheze (half an hour by bike) to visit majestic Heeswijk Castle (40 minutes), or head for Meierijstad and row a boat around the lake in leafy Kienehoef Park (45 minutes). You can also follow a former railway line from Veghel (20 minutes) that once connected The Netherlands with Germany; today you can pedal over remnants of railway bridges and past old stations.
Does history fascinate you? Book ahead to visit Duinhove Rural Museum (10 minutes’ walk) to check out farming utensils and period rooms found in rural Brabant, or head for the Krona Museum (half an hour) in the grounds of a monastery, where you can see a mix of religious and contemporary art and potter around the herb garden.
