Bring your swimming togs, for Recreatiepark de Tien Heugten in the North Netherlands is a watery site. As might be divined from the name, this is a recreation park – and it's surrounded by a lake (with several beaches) for swimming and sunbathing, with more of the same available at the site pool with waterslide. The kids can build sandcastles or play games on the beach, or make friends at the pool, at the playgrounds or at the kids' club, while bigger sorts can soak up the feeling of being well relaxed... supping a drink or two at the bar, surfing the internet with the wifi available in the main building – or supping another fresh drink at the terrace...? And round and about? This lush place is in the Drenthe province, very niftily set with easy access to day trips in all directions as well as to the many local bike rides past rivers, fields and forests (some starting at the entrance to the site). The cities of Assen and Groningen are within easy reach for sightseeing, shopping and museum pottering, and the Drouwenerzand Attractiepark theme park is 10 kilometres away. The park also has a restaurant and a miniature golf course (guaranteed mirth for all), and a shop selling fresh bread and plenty of essentials. It's divided into several different fields, each with its own playground, and has a lively entertainment and activities programme in summer to keep all ages occupied. The essentials include a well-maintained amenities block with hot showers that's suitable for disabled guests; a large launderette with washers and dryers is also on site.

Liked Nothing. Oh I tell a lie, the food in the onsite pub is ok.

Disliked You need a special token for the showers that you must buy from the shop (which is only open 9-5pm) and they are really weak and no clean. The pool is tiny. The "swimming lake" is grotty and small. They had some sort of disco at night just as I was planning to go to sleep. All this AND it was 30 Euro just for a grass pitch which I used for about 12 hours. Pitchup said it was going to be 20 Euro but apparently there is some taxes or something, it wasn't really clear where the extra 10 came from

Recommended museums in the region include the open-air Ellert en Brammert Museum in nearby Schoonoord (10 minutes' drive), the National Prison Museum in Veenhuizen (30 minutes) and the Industrial Narrow Gauge Museum in the town of Erica, also within half an hour. If the kids say Pah to that, they can be mollified without too much faff as the Drouwenerzand Attractiepark theme park in Drouwen, 10 to 15 minutes away, and Wildlands adventure zoo and theme park is within 20.
