  • Drenthe family holiday park in Dwingelderveld National Park
  • A 10-minute drive to Bird Park Ruinen and 20 to Strand Nijstad beach
  • Outdoor pool, mini golf, playground, bar and restaurant on site
Set on the edge of Dwingelderveld National Park – the largest wetland heath area in Europe – Vakantiepark De Wiltzangh is surrounded by green forests and vast moorland tracts. Nature lovers (and indeed anyone seeking a bit of peace and quiet) will be in their element when they arrive on site, as this is a place where you can wake up and fall asleep to the sweet song of birds. Families are also in the right place here, with active and sporty facilities including an outdoor pool, miniature golf course and a play area; there’s also a sports field for older kids keen to have a run around with a ball. Looking to get out into the Drenthe’s heathland landscapes? Vakantiepark De Wiltzangh makes a fantastic base for both cycling and walking adventures – and if you’ve left your bike at home, no problems, simply hire one on site. Keep your younger offspring happy with a (seasonal) visit to pet the lambs at the Schaapskudde Ruinen (Ruinen sheepfold, five minutes’ drive away) or let them wear themselves out following the campsite’s gnome-themed treasure hunt. With an essentials store, bar and restaurant on site, you’re all catered for, but if you should fancy a change of scene, you can eat out in Ruinen (five minutes’ drive) too.

Local attractions

Take the kids to spot snowy owls and capercaillies at Vogelpark Ruinen bird park (10 minutes’ drive), treat them to Wild West-themed rides at Slagharen (35 minutes) or take a savannah safari at Wildlands Adventure Zoo Emmen (40 minutes). Need to cool off on sunny days? Head for Strand Nijstad (20 minutes) for fun splashing in the lake, or take a dip from the sandy beach at Blauwe Meer (half an hour). Keen to add a little culture into the mix? Try to solve the puzzle of the mysterious prehistoric dolmens near the villages of Diever and Havelte (both 20 minutes). At Frederiksoord (25 minutes) you can tour the 19th-century almshouses, communal kitchen and farmsteads of a Colony of Benevolence, founded by a philanthropist keen to help people out of poverty. Distinctive Dutch townscapes of canals, windmills and gabled houses can be seen in lively Meppel (25 minutes), and typical thatched cottages in Giethoorn (half an hour); both towns have a sprinkling of museums and cafés.
