- Lakeside site in the 'Green Venice' of the Netherlands
- Five minutes' drive to Giethoorn; half an hour to Zwolle
- Watersports, fishing and bike hire on site; lake view from pitches
This is a fabulous spot for those who like to pack a whole lot of outdoor activities into their holidays. Camping d’ Hof is in the area known as the ‘Green Venice’ of the Netherlands, and it’s right on the banks of Bovenwiede Lake, with Weerribben-Wieden National Park close by.
All of this adds up to a most enticing Overijssel location, with heaps of options for fresh-air antics including bike rides, walks, fishing and watersports. These last two are available right on site, in fact – there’s direct access to the lake’s waters for windsurfing, paddleboarding, canoeing and freshwater swims, as well as fishing areas.
That lakeside location also means some lovely views – the pitch layout means that none of them are too far away from the water’s edge, giving all guests a chance to experience the joy of watching the sun set over the lake.
For more watery views, take a walk along the canalside path to Giethoorn, a little over three kilometres away – there are several shops, museums and places to eat either along the way or once you arrive in town.
Life has been kept fairly simple back on site, with no noisy entertainments to interfere with your peaceful break. Lots of the essentials have been covered, though – guests have access to a launderette, a washing-up area, a communal fridge and freezer, chemical disposal, toilets and showers. The pitches are not accessible by car, but hardcarts are provided to help transport all your kit around the place.

Local attractions
Much of the attraction of this area lies in the opportunity just to wander through the ‘Green Venice’ area, taking in all the canals, lakes and the traditional thatched farms on the peat islands, along with more than 170 bridges linking it all together. Walks and bike rides are good ways to explore, or you can take a boat trip from the lovely village of Giethoorn (five minutes’ drive).
Once you’ve seen your immediate surroundings, set off to explore more gorgeous landscapes in Weerribben-Wieden National Park (10 minutes), another wetland area where you may well spot otters, egrets and other wildlife. Boats (electric or rowing) and canoes are popular ways to explore, but you may also like to take a walk on the nine-kilometre Kiersche Wijde trail through some of the best views.
For other days out, head to the Hanseatic city of Zwolle (half an hour) to see the historic city walls and towers and admire the art (including works by Mondrian and Van Gogh) at Museum de Fundatie, or take the kids to Slagharen (45 minutes), an amusement park with waterpark, rollercoasters and themed shows.
