Stays should begin with lengthy explores of Podgorica 15 minutes’ drive from the site, where there are gardens and parks to wander, a cathedral to be awed by, a casino to roll the dice on and a gallery to glide through, as well as restaurants, bars and plenty of shops for burning a hole in that credit card. When ready to turn away from the urban, get started on the spectacular Montenegrin monasteries nearby: the Serbian Orthodox Dajbabe (which is partially in a cave) is the closest, 15 minutes from the site; the monasteries of Beška, Starčevo and Moračnik are on islands arrayed along the southern edge of Lake Skadar in stunning enough spots to warrant boat trips; and the stunning painted interior of Morača and the spectacular cliff-face Ostrog are both about an hour away. Closer to home base, get to know the even more scenic parts Montenegro: the site’s 15 minutes from the Niagara Falls, 25 minutes from the mountaintop ruins of Haj Nehaj Fortress and 15 minutes from the pretty lakeside town of Virpazar. Tipplers may want to finish hols with a drink… Luckily there are a handful of wineries within easy reach and it’s less than 25 minutes to wine tasting and tours at Šipčanik and half an hour to Radevic Estate.
