A friendly farm, a family-run setup and a five-minute drive from pretty Montescudaio… yep, Agriturismo Fattoria La Prugnola really is fab. This site in the Tuscany wine region – with scenic surrounds filled with lush Mediterranean plants and an olive grove – is a grand glamping spot for a restful time in the upper Maremma area.
The park is just as swish as the hillside and Etruscan coast views it showcases from its outdoor pergola: each unit has a private wetroom a short walk away. For meals, guests can fry up fare in the private kitchenette provided in each unit – using local extra virgin olive oil bought from the site – before tucking into treats in the spacious garden or on the sofa in the common area with its mini library.
Foodies frequently flock to Tuscany and around the Maremma is no different, with fresh seafood being a speciality in coastal resorts like Marina di Cecina (15 minutes' drive) and Castiglioncello (25 minutes). If you want to dine without flitting too far, the nearby red roofed village of Montescudaio also has a handful of traditional Italian trattorias – plus pizza takeaways – in its old stone streets (make sure to check at the site about discounts as well).
You’ll need plenty of fuel for explores in this area packed with sights: Agriturismo Fattoria La Prugnola is a brill base for forays to top Tuscan towns and cities like Volterra (40 minutes’ drive) and Pisa (50 minutes). Tuscany's villages are always worth a wander, so pull on your comfiest shoes and get going: Casale Marittimo, Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri are all less than a 30-minute drive through the cypress-spotted lands of this region. You can also cycle to some of these stunning settlements – ask in Montescudaio about routes and rental.
For more adventuring, rope courses amid the oak tree woods of Il Giardino Sospeso are a 15-minute drive away and a school with windsurfing, kitesurfing, surfing and standup paddleboarding classes is over in Vada (20 minutes in the car).
Further from the park are other beachy areas of the Etruscan Coast including sandy Quercetano Bay (25 minutes away) and those around the Gulf of Baratti (40 minutes) for Ligurian Sea swims. Snorkelling and diving are also popular pastimes around here, especially on craggy coves like Buca Delle Fate, 50 minutes’ drive, where underwater creatures take cover beside the rocks.
