Local attractions
There’s enough going on at Elba Travels to keep you busy for weeks. You can sail along the indented coastline, go kayaking or windsurfing, fasten on a snorkel and swim over a shipwreck, or go cliff jumping (perhaps one for the braver souls). On dry land there are facilities for guided mountain-biking and hiking expeditions too.
After all that exertion, you could be forgiven for heading to the beach and having a snooze in the sun. Stick to Morcone Beach (accessed from the site), or for a bit more seaside action, make for Barbarossa (20 minutes’ drive), a small and popular cove backed with few restaurants and bars.
To see something of Elba’s cultural heritage, try historic Portoferraio (half an hour), where you can have a wander up to the castle and potter around cobbled streets lined with pastel-coloured houses. You might also like to drive up to the hilltop Santuario della Madonna di Monserrato (25 minutes) for views over the valley to the Tyrrhenian Sea, and on the return journey, hit Capoliveri (10 minutes) for a a glass of something chilled at sunset.
