  • Peaceful Tuscany farm site 15 minutes' drive from Gambassi Terme
  • A 20-minute drive to San Gimignano; half an hour to Volterra
  • Farm produce for sale and truffle-hunting activities (May to October)
A holiday that revolves around Tuscan food? Sign up here. La Taverna Azienda Agricola, about a 15-minute drive from Gambassi Terme, is a farm site that’s got a lot to offer for foodie guests. To start with, the farm sells its own produce right here – think honey, pesto, eggs, extra-virgin olive oil and pickled or fresh vegetables – along with other items from local farms such as wine, cheese and pasta. You should certainly be able to whip up a few tasty meals with that little lot, but if you’re not in the habit of cooking on holiday you can instead make reservations to have breakfast and/or dinner provided for you on site. There’s a good chance to delve a little deeper into Tuscan cuisine here, too, as you can book in to watch truffle hunting in the woods (May to October) or participate in the saffron harvest (mid-October to mid-November). And in any season you can take a walk along the ancient Via del Sale, the path used by the Romans to transport salt from Volterra to Florence – it runs right through the farm. The farm site is a proper rural location, with lots of walking trails through the surroundings and several traditional villages to visit nearby. Access to the site is along a road that's unpaved but wide and well kept, and there are simple guest facilities including toilets and showers.

Local attractions

When you’re not truffle hunting or feasting on all the treats available on site, you can be working up a good appetite for dinner with a hike through the surrounding scrubland or along a section of the Via del Sale. There are also bike trails throughout the area, and horse riding is available close by too. For gentler strolls, head to some of the area’s attractive villages and towns – perhaps San Gimignano (20 minutes' drive), known as the Town of Five Towers, or Volterra (half an hour), which claims to be the oldest city in Italy. Monteriggioni, Certaldo and Colle val d’Elsa are all within a 45-minute drive too. Full day trips? Siena, Pisa and Florence are all roughly an hour’s drive away. Time to relax instead? Make your way to Gambassi Terme (15 minutes) for the thermal baths and wellness treatments at Terme della Via Francigena.
