If taking in views of Mount Etna is part of the plan for your Sicily break, you'll definitely want to take a look at Etna Glamping. As the name suggests (and as you’ll pick up from the pics), this small-scale site near the island's east coast has the volcano as its backdrop for some fabulous scenery throughout the day.
About a kilometre from the village of Milo, this is a place that encourages you to slow down for a while and appreciate what's all around you. It’s a peaceful place with nature right at its heart – and plenty of spots where you can chill out and enjoy that scenery, taking in black lava fields and colourful wildflowers as well as admiring the famous peak itself.
The scenery is unmistakably Sicilian, and so is the hospitality. The glamping site is part of a vineyard where you'll be able to sign up for a raft of food and wine experiences including wine tastings, cooking classes and food and wine pairing sessions. Each tent has its own mini kitchen and picnic table so you'll also be able to organise alfresco drinks and meals in your private space.
As well as that, each tent has a comfortable bed and an ensuite bathroom, plus useful extra touches like air conditioning and a safe. Outside, you can put your feet up in a hammock and read a book or soak in your private Finnish hot tub – both are also excellent places to soak up those views in peace. Not quite relaxed enough yet? Local attractions
Come here to slow down or use the place as a base for touring the eastern side of the island. Of course you’ll want to start with some time around Etna – perhaps signing up for a trekking tour from the site, trying out the high ropes courses at Adventure Etna Park (five minutes' walk) or joining local quad bike or horse riding tours.
Other options close by include checking out the tiny buildings at Parco Tematico Sicilia in Miniatura (15 minutes’ drive), meeting the colourful residents of Butterfly House (20 minutes) or taking a hike through the Alcantara Gorges (45 minutes).
And while the glamping site is very much a rural setup, city life isn't far off. Taormina (45 minutes) is one of Sicily’s hotspots for its ancient amphitheatre, the Corvaja Palace and its gorgeous network of streets, piazzas and churches. Catania (45 minutes) also has plenty of historical interest, including the unusual elephant fountain.
