Football-mad kids may well love the idea of pitching up on a soccer field, but that’s only the start of the fun when you stay at Lu Farillu in the Puglia town of San Cesario di Lecce. At this peaceful site surrounded by greenery, toddlers have a play area to themselves, while you and any older offspring can play padel tennis and volleyball, soak up the sun in gardens dotted with palm trees, or take refreshing dips in the swimming pool when the temperature gets too much for you.
There’s also an on-site restaurant (takeaways are available to carry back to your pitch) with an adjoining bar, and a lounge and TV room for cosying up if you’re staying in the colder winter months. Handy practical facilities include accessible showers and separate bathroom facilities for men and women. There’s also ample parking for cars.
Supermarkets and lively markets within five minutes’ drive cover all your grocery needs. The gorgeous, historic centre of Lecce – the ‘Florence of Puglia’ – with its ancient Roman ruins and splendid baroque churches, is 10 minutes away by car, with Adriatic Sea beaches about 20 minutes’ drive.
