Football-mad kids may well love the idea of pitching up on a soccer field, but that’s only the start of the fun when you stay at Lu Farillu, on the edge of the Puglia town of San Cesario di Lecce. At this peaceful site surrounded by greenery, toddlers have a play area to themselves, while you and any older offspring can play padel tennis and volleyball, soak up the sun in gardens dotted with palm trees, or take refreshing dips in the swimming pool when the temperature gets too much for you.
Being on the edge of town is a handy thing, as it means supermarkets, markets and restaurants are all close by (within five minutes’ drive) to sort most of your foodie needs. There’s also an on-site restaurant (with takeaways available if you’d like to dine at your pitch) with an adjoining bar, and a lounge and TV room for cosying up on cooler days. Handy practical facilities include a dog park, a communal fridge and separate bathrooms for men and women (including accessible facilities). There’s also ample parking for cars.
This is a lovely spot for a quiet break with the family, but it’s also well located for getting out to tour some of Puglia’s top spots – for starters, the gorgeous historic centre of Lecce (the ‘Florence of Puglia’), with its ancient Roman ruins and splendid baroque churches, is 10 minutes away by car, and there are Adriatic Sea beaches within about 20 minutes’ drive.

Local attractions
The city of Lecce (10 minutes’ drive) is on lots of visitors’ wishlists – and with good reason, because it’s a gorgeous place full of baroque architecture, intriguing museums, Roman ruins and stunning sandstone buildings that seem to glow when the sun hits just right. Other nearby cities and towns that are worth a trip include Copertino (25 minutes), Gallipoli (half an hour) and Otranto (35 minutes).
Dotted around the surrounding area are several other attractions for a variety of tastes and interests, including the Cave del Duca concert venue (10 minutes), the Stadio Ettore Giardiniero (15 minutes) for football games and Le Cesine Natural Reserve (25 minutes) for walks among forest and wetlands.
Over at the coast, you can also take a wander through the marina and out to the lighthouse in San Cataldo di Lecce (20 minutes) before hitting the town’s beach. Other well-liked beaches nearby are in Torre dell’Orso (half an hour), Porto Cesareo (35 minutes) and the quiet cove of Cala dell’Acquaviva (40 minutes).
