Heading to the Puglia region of Italy for your holidays? Be sure to take a wee detour into the spectacular Parco Nazionale del Gargano, jutting out into the Adriatic Sea. On the easternmost tip of this rocky promontory is Sosta Camper Il Ruscello, a peaceful spot with a pretty enviable selling point: direct access to the Spiaggia di Molinella beach.
And oh, what a beach this is: squeezed between two headlands that shelter it from the wind, with fine golden sand and shallow, child-friendly waters. You can just rock up and unfurl your towel, or (for a little extra pampering) head to one of the lidos where you can rent an umbrella and sun loungers. When it’s time to get active, you can launch your kayak or paddleboard, rent a pedal boat or climb up to the Trabucco of Molinella, a traditional wooden fishing structure at the northern end of the beach.
Amenities at the site, which is dog-friendly (though there is an extra fee for your four-legged companion), include a toilet block, showers and a washing-up area, plus charging facilities. There are a couple of supermarkets within a five-minute drive, and the resort of Vieste, with its shops and restaurants, is 10 minutes away.

Local attractions
Vieste has a town centre lined with low, whitewashed houses and crossed by narrow streets. Climb up the Scalinata dell’Amore staircase, decorated with hearts and the lyrics of a love song about the Pizzomunno monolith, which anchors the Spiaggia di Castello beach. Boat tours to explore the coastal caves depart from the marina.
Peschici (25 minutes’ drive) is a pretty coastal town clinging to a ragged cliff topped by a 10th-century Norman fortress. Along the Baia di Peschici is a large sweep of golden sand with umbrellas and sun loungers for hire, and you can catch a ferry to the Tremiti Islands for the harbour.
When you’ve had enough of the sand and the sea, head inland to the Riserva Naturale della Foresta Umbra (half an hour), where you can hike in shaded woodland, stopping at Laghetto Falascone to see the swimming turtles and the nearby deer herd.
