  • Peaceful site in the hills of Puglia’s Gargano National Park
  • Lake Lesina birdwatching 20 minutes’ drive; Termoli 50 minutes
  • Horse riding excursions on site; 15 minutes’ drive from the sea
In a peaceful corner of the Gargano National Park, surrounded by gentle hills but still within easy reach of Puglia’s Adriatic beaches (about 15 minutes’ drive), Gio Horses has much to commend it. Its location, for sure, but also its USP (somewhat given away by the site name): horses. This is the place to book if you want your holiday in southern Italy to include guided horseback excursions through the region’s splendid farmland, vineyards and hillsides. Of course, you don’t have to be passionate about horses to stay here, as there's much to do besides riding. For example, birdwatching at Lake Lesina (20 minutes) and Lake Varano (half an hour), two large coastal lagoons with brackish waters that attract cormorants and herons; and hiking the Gargano National Park’s pine tree-shaded interior or its spectacular coastline, stopping for a swim in sheltered coves and secluded beaches. Then there’s the region’s gastronomic heritage to explore (think handmade orecchiette pasta, gooey burrata cheese and freshly caught seafood), which you can do in the restaurants of the small town of San Nicandro Garganico (10 minutes), which is also where you head when you need to stock up on groceries. The site has few frills, but there is a toilet/shower block (with step-free access), a dedicated quiet space and picnic tables.

Local attractions

The Sentiero dell’Anima (20 minutes' drive) is an area of lush parkland with spectacular views of the coast. A hiking path here is dotted with signs carrying lines of classic Italian poems such as Dante’s ‘Divine Comedy’. If you don’t speak Italian, try one of the two other trails that take you through a botanical garden and an open-air collection of sundials. The sandy beach at Termoli (50 minutes) is overlooked by the imposing limestone walls of the 13th-century Svevo Castle. Stroll through the alleyways of the Old Town, popping into the Romanesque cathedral, or catch a ferry to the Tremiti Islands: it takes just over an hour to reach the splendid beaches of San Domino. In Vieste (an hour and 15 minutes), the sandy beach is anchored at one end by the gigantic Monolite Pizzomunno. In town, the Lovers’ Staircase, decorated with red love hearts and the lyrics of a popular song, is a favourite spot for a selfie, while the Malacological Museum displays shells from all over the world.
