What a spectacular Piemonte place – and with a Finnish sauna and the means for massage on site too. (This is very much the time to flick through the stunning site pics.) Camping Village Yolki Palki is a quiet retreat in the Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, with spectacular woody and mountainy views, in a heavenly spot for walkers and wildlife watchers, and in top stargazing land because of the area's dark skies and light pollution. Round and about, the site is also only about 14 kilometres from the city of Domodossola and 50 minutes from excellent Lake Maggiore, for days out city breaking, mountain biking, boating and island hopping – once you've extracted your self from the on-site Finnish sauna or massage table, of course. Other facilities include a TV room, a games room and a play area, alongside modern and well-kept amenities of a toilet and shower block and a laundry room. Bikes and e-bikes can be hired too, and guests can avail themselves of a special discount on trips to the nearby Oniro thermal pool. And would you like a topping recommendation for an activity or two on site here? After a long and lovely day among the local landscape, settle down at the Yolki Palki restaurant for a good selection of good-sized portions of traditional mountain cuisine – and then relocate to your lodge balcony for some stargazing and a sup under the Piemonte skies.

Local attractions

This is gorgeous mountainous and lake-filled land, with many options for hiking, biking, climbing, mountaineering, caving and rafting all nearby. Camping Village Yolki Palki is also close to the waterfalls, small lakes and pastures of the Bognanco Valley, one of the Ossola valleys that make up the biggest wilderness area in Italy. Watersports, lakeside walks and more spectacular scenery can all be had at the lakes of Maggiore and Orta, both within easy driving distance. The famed medieval quarters of Domodossola are a short drive away; from town, a much recommended option is taking the handsomely scenic Domodossola–Locarno or Centovalli railway over the border to Switzerland, via a 52-kilometre route passing Santa Maria Maggiore and Cavigliano to wind up at the Swiss station of Locarno. This area is also famed for its thermal springs, so take in some of the tasty drinking water as well as having a day out in one of the many local wellness centres and spa hotels open to the public.
