- Safari tents in the wooded hills of the Alta Langa area of Piedmont
- Parco Safari delle Langhe 35 minutes’ drive; Alba 45 minutes
- Private hot tubs; pool with valley views; breakfast basket; bike hire
For a food- and wine-led holiday in the Piedmont region, Agriturismo Casa del Principe, at a farmhouse in the hills of the Alta Langa area (renowned for its production of hazelnuts, truffle, cheese and spumante sparkling wine) might just be the place to be.
Surrounded by lush woodlands and terraces growing lavender, rosemary and other aromatic herbs, this peaceful site sits 10 minutes’ drive from the villages of Cortemilia and Cravanzana. These will likely be your pitstops when you need a supermarket or a place to eat, though it’s well worth dining at the on-site restaurant, which serves delicious fare, from boards of local cheeses and cold cuts to pasta dishes.
Accommodation is in spacious safari tents each with its own bathroom and shower, kitchen corner, air conditioning and heating, plus a furnished patio. As you emerge onto the patio in the morning, a breakfast basket filled with local and seasonal delicacies will be waiting for you. Also on the patio is your private wood-fired hot tub, for relaxing soaks spent planning your next-day itinerary or sipping local wines. And when it gets too hot in the tub, the swimming pool with views of the valley is a top spot for a refreshing dip.
If you manage to tear yourself away from all this for one afternoon, take advantage of the on-site e-bike hire and explore the nearby wineries, such as Cantina Eredi Canonica, in Torre Bormida (10 minutes by bike, five by car) and Patrone (half an hour by bike; 10 minutes by car).

Local attractions
Big cats, primates and zebras are among the residents at the Parco Safari delle Langhe (35 minutes’ drive), a sprawling animal park with a drive-through section and a walkable area. There’s also a reptile house and (for kids who would rather play than admire exotic beasties) a room full of inflatable structures.
A visit to the historic town of Alba (45 minutes) starts from Piazza Risorgimento, with its pastel-coloured buildings and elegant arcades. Swing by the church of San Domenico, which dates from the 13th century, then try to catch all of the city’s many medieval towers before stopping for a lunch featuring local products such as truffles.
Drive to the Ligurian coast (an hour) for a day at the beach. The town of Zinola has a sandy beach and a cycle path skirting the tree-lined promenade, while the small beach at Punta Pròdani sits under a dramatic rocky cliff.
