  • Sleep under the stars on a farm site in the Alta Langa countryside
  • Truffle-tasting in Alta 25 minutes’ drive; Mondovì 40 minutes
  • Wooden pod with an open roof; breakfast supplied and produce available
When you fancy falling asleep under stars and waking up to Piedmont’s clear blue skies, it’s time to head on down to Cascina Zan, a peaceful farm site 10 minutes’ from Paroldo in the Alta Langa countryside. Accommodation here comes in an ingenious StarsBOX – inspired by the shepherd’s huts found in the Alps – a tiny wooden house with a roof that opens, giving you spectacular vistas of the sparkling night sky. Bedding is supplied and the StarsBOX – which sleeps up to two in comfort – is surrounded by woodlands and meadows, and set on a hill with far-reaching rural views. It’s reached via a path about five minutes’ walk from the main farmhouse, where there is bathroom for guest use, a terrace with a picnic table and a communal kitchen-living room with a fireplace. Berries and hazelnuts are available in season, while breakfast is served in the traditional stone farmhouse and included as part of the deal. Pack lunches can be provided for a small charge, and you can stock up on comestibles at the small store in Mombarcaro (25 minutes). Reached via a 1.7-km dirt road, Cascina Zan sits in about five hectares of pasture with a stable and well-stocked barn where donkeys over-winter. You have the run of the gardens and vegetable patch, and several hiking and hiking trails start from the farmhouse.
