- Glamping tent in a garden in the foothills of the Sibillini Mountains
- Sarnano 15 minutes’ drive; Macerata 45 minutes
- Use of a separate apartment with kitchen and bathroom; dogs welcome
In the countryside of the Marche region, in the foothills of the Apennines, Glamping Penna out-glamps most glamping accommodations by having not just a furnished tent, but an apartment, too – talk about raising the glamping bar.
Equipped with ventilation, electricity and mosquito nets, the five-metre tent (in a farmhouse garden 15 minutes’ drive from the historic town of Sarnano) houses sleeping quarters for up to four people; for anything else (bathroom, kitchen and living room), guests head into the apartment. There is also an outdoor area for alfresco dining (and afternoon snoozing in comfy, shaded hammocks), all accompanied by spectacular views of the Sibillini Mountains.
Hosts Francesco and Camilla welcome couples, friends and families (dogs too, for an additional charge), and they supply most of what you might need during your stay here: from bed linens, towels and toiletries, to delicious breakfasts prepared with locally sourced ingredients. If the kids get restless, there are board games, table tennis and dart boards; and if the adults get a little sore (perhaps from scrambling up the dramatic peaks in the Sibillini Mountains National Park), it’s possible to arrange for a massage or visit Glamping Penna’s sister property (five minutes’ drive) for a soak in a tub.
The village of Penna San Giovanni (five minutes) has shops and a couple of eateries, and there are several country restaurants within a 15-minute drive.

Local attractions
On a hot day, head to Lake Fiastra (35 minutes’ drive), a forest-fringed reservoir with a well-equipped grass beach with canoe and pedal boat hire. The seven-kilometre Lame Rosse trail starts from the northern end of the lake and takes you to a landscape of red-coloured canyons that wouldn’t be out of place in a western movie.
In the university city of Macerata (45 minutes), check out the literary frescoes in 18th-century Palazzo Buonaccorsi, which also houses a collection of historic carriages and modern artworks. During the summer months, it’s worth trying to score a ticket for the opera festival that takes place at the open-air Sferisterio amphitheatre.
Along the coast (50 minutes), small towns such as Lido di Fermo and Porto Sant’Elpidio have long, palm-lined and (usually) cycle-friendly waterfront promenades dotted with restaurants serving traditional seafood dishes. Sandy beaches tend to have a gentle slope into the Adriatic Sea.
