- Small family-run site less than five minutes from Lake Como
- Paradise for surfing, sailing and canoeing
- Two-minute drive from the trails of Pian di Spagna Nature Reserve
If you’ve always felt like the only difference between you and George or Amal Clooney was how much closer to Lake Como they are, then you’re in luck – you’re about to close that gap. Campeggio Poncione, in the village of Sorico, Lombardia, is less than five minutes’ drive from the town of Gera Lario at the northern tip of Lake Como.
You probably won’t be surprised to hear that the area around Campeggio Poncione is a haven for watersports enthusiasts – head out on those Lake Como waters to try windsurfing, kitesurfing and paddleboarding, have a go at sailing, or rent a canoe to explore the Pian di Spagna nature reserve.
They’re not the only activities you can set your muscles to either… Poncione is a two-minute drive from Pian di Spagna Nature Reserve – follow the trails on foot, bike or horseback, taking in the views of the mountains and trying to spot crested newts, kestrels, peregrine falcons and foxes.
Once you’ve worked up a sweat, cool off in the on-site pool then lounge in the sun with a drink from the bar in hand. Top your day off with dinner at one of the many restaurants nearby, and stock up on late-night snacks and other essentials in Sorico.

Local attractions
You can’t stay this close to Lake Como and not soak up absolutely everything there is to do on its shores.
Visit the gardens and museums at Villa Carlotta, Castello di Vezio and Villa Monastero, look over the Como waters from the religious complex at Piona Abbey, or explore the stunning gorge at Orrido di Bellano, all around 30 minutes’ drive from Campeggio Poncione.
If you’re up for a bit more of a trek, make the trip to the city of Como on the lake’s southern shore, less than an hour and a half from Poncione. See the spectacular scenery around Lake Como from a different vantage point by taking to the waters for a boat trip, then take a food tour of the city.
There are a few places in Como worth spying out, too: Como Cathedral, Villa Olmo and the Tempio Voltiano museum are must-sees. Before you dive into the city’s streets though, jump aboard the Como-Brunate funicular for views back over the lake and towards the Alps.
Thrill seekers might want to steer clear of hols that are all stately homes, museums and calm waters, so they should head instead to Fly Emotion Aerofune for ziplining or Lake Como Adventure Park to swing around the tree-tops.
