- Remote medieval stone tower in the Apennines of central Italy
- Oasi delle Piane 35 minutes’ drive; Modena an hour
- Dogs welcome; forest wood-fired sauna; spectacular stargazing
A 15th-century stone tower with exposed wooden beams could be the setting for your next Italian holiday when you book at Tower House Gombola. Whether you’re after a romantic break, mountain hikes with your dog or a digital detox so you can pour all your attention into that creative project you just can’t seem to complete, this remote spot should tick all (or most) of your boxes.
The tower can be reached only on foot or by an off-road vehicle. If at the airport you hired a little Fiat 500 (cute and so Italian, but not exactly suited for these roads), don’t worry: the owners (who are always available to provide assistance during your stay) can take you to the site in their four-wheel drive.
A key consideration for both lovers and creative types is probably privacy. And in this wooded area in the Apennines of the central Emilia Romagna region (about an hour’s drive south-east of the city of Modena) you should get privacy aplenty, plus blissful silence and 360-degree views of the mountains and valleys.
There are few frills here, though this is not exactly medieval-style living: the tower is illuminated via solar panels; a woodburning stove keeps the cold away (wood is included); and there’s a small kitchen, too. The nearest shop is in the town of Polinago (five minutes’ drive), where there’s also a pizzeria.
Outside the tower are a composting toilet and a solar shower. A private wood-fired sauna in the forest and spectacular stargazing sessions complete the picture.
