  • Quiet site in the wooded hills north of Ravello, on the Amalfi Coast
  • Amalfi 25 minutes’ drive; Castellammare di Stabia an hour
  • Playground; dog park; five minutes’ walk from a restaurant
Take the lush, ancient woods of the Monti Lattari Regional Park; add the terraced landscape of the Amalfi Coast and relative proximity to splendid beaches on the Tyrrhenian Sea – chances are the picture you’re building in your mind is starting to look a lot like what you get at Amalfi Agricamping. This peaceful, shaded site feels blissfully remote, but in fact it sits about four kilometres north of Ravello (10 minutes’ drive), which is handy if you’re after a supermarket or a fruit and vegetable shop. Ravello also has plenty of dining options, though the nearest restaurant to the site is a whole lot closer (about half a kilometre away, or a five-minute walk). As for the beaches, within a half-hour’s drive you should also be able to reach spectacular lidos sheltered by tall cliffs, lapped by crystal-clear waters, and equipped with umbrellas and sun loungers. Just a look at the hilly landscape around you tells you that this area is full of hiking trails – some more challenging than others. Start gently, with the Lemons’ Path (25 minutes), which snakes through fragrant lemon groves, linking the coastal towns of Minori and Maiori. Or head to the Valle delle Ferriere (half an hour), whose microclimate makes it a habitat for salamanders, as well as multiple types of ferns. Amenities on site include a playground with swings and slides, a dog park and a dedicated quiet zone. There are also communal barbecue stations and gazebos with picnic tables, plus washing-up areas and a toilet block.

Local attractions

The stunning coastal views from Ravello (10 minutes’ drive) might make your heart beat a little faster. This elegant small town clinging to the mountainside also has Villa Rufolo, a centuries-old villa with formal gardens; and the modernist Oscar Niemeyer Auditorium, with a viewing terrace. Amalfi (25 minutes) was once one of Italy’s main naval powers, and its long history can be explored at the Ancient Arsenal of the Republic of Amalfi. Stop for a drink at a bar at the bottom of the staircase leading to the Cathedral of St Andrew Apostle, then visit this elegant church with a ceramic tile-covered bell tower. Castellammare di Stabia (an hour) anchors the southernmost point of the Gulf of Naples. Like Pompeii, it was also destroyed by Mount Vesuvius’ eruption of 79 AD; the Scavi di Stabia - Villa San Marco archaeological site includes several ancient villas with well-preserved frescoes.
