Local attractions
Feeling a tad guilty about spending endless hours on the beach? Haul yourself up for a history lesson or two, taking in the Metauros Archaeology Museum and touring the Taurina ruins – both are about a 10-minute drive from the site.
Or perhaps a stroll would sort you out? If so, Palmi (10 minutes’ drive) is a prime place for a potter, as is seafront Scilla (half an hour), where you can meander around medieval streets and Ruffo Castle. For more ambitious ambling, aim for the Aspromonte National Park, an hour’s drive away.
If you simply can’t bear to be away from the sea, borrow a boat in Tonnara and take it out to whichever part of the coastline takes your fancy, or venture to Villa San Giovanni (35 minutes), where bigger boats set sail for the short hop to Sicily. Or go the whole hog and properly immerse yourself in seawater on a scuba diving excursion from Scilla (half an hour).
