Doubtless you’ll spend many happy hours soaking in the naturally heated pool at Harkány Thermal Spa (five minutes’ walk) or booking relaxing massages, while the kids can have a splash around on the complex’s lazy river and dizzying waterslides. Other sporting facilities available locally include bike hire, tennis-court rental and ping-pong tables, a running track and family competitions in the Retro Bowling Bar (also five minutes). If you’re something of a wine buff, you’ll be pleased to hear that the Villány wine region – famed for its robust reds – is around 20 minutes’ drive away. You can tour some of the leading wineries, including Gere Attila and Günzer (both 25 minutes), try their vintages and of course buy some to take back home with you. When you’d like to learn about the culture of southern Hungary’s Baranya region, you have a choice of historic towns to visit. First among equals is stunning Pécs (half an hour),with its fascinating mixture of ancient Roman catacombs, an Ottoman mosque and baroque-era architecture. There’s a spectacular red-and-white pilgrimage church with soaring spires in Máriagyűd, and neighbouring Siklós (both 10 minutes) is home to an impressive medieval and Renaissance castle complex.
