- Dog-friendly campsite in Wendland with pick-your-own meadow pitches
- Woodland hikes from site; five-minutes walk to the German Green Belt
- Natural swimming pool, playground, beer garden, bistro, dog park
With no set pitches and the freedom to set up wherever you want on the large camping meadow, family-run Campingpark Fuhrenkamp near Bergen in southern Wendland welcomes groups of family or friends – and their well-behaved dogs – to set up camp together in peaceful rural surroundings.
Life at this laid-back spot revolves around the chemical-free natural pool, where you can all swim and splash around before having a laze on the sandy beach on sunny days. There’s also a playground to keep youngsters occupied, and there’s plenty of room on the camping meadow to have a run-around too.
Pooches can join in the fun, have an off-lead romp in the dedicated dog-exercise field or join you all for family strolls in the neighbouring woodland.
If you’re going down the self-catering route, firepits and barbecues are permitted on site – in fact there’s a covered barbecue hut all set up for you if the weather turns rainy – but you may well be tempted by the call of the campsite’s beer garden and bistro, open daily in high season.
You can also feast on freshly made bread and pastries from the on-site bakery, and there are several dining choices within a 10-minute stroll if you fancy a change of scenery.

Local attractions
Numerous cycling and hiking trails lead directly into the surrounding countryside from the campsite, and the German Green Belt long-distance hiking route following the line of the former Iron Curtain is a five-minute walk away. You could also explore the area on horseback from the riding school in the local village of Schulz (10 minutes’ walk, they also offer lessons if you’ve never been riding before).
Rather venture out on four wheels? You have a choice of several driving tours around Elbhöhen-Wendland Nature Park (20 minutes’ drive) to see time-forgotten rural villages and maybe some rare birds of prey, or stop off at Naturum Göhrde Waldmuseum (35 minutes) to get lost in the labyrinth and follow nature trails through the forest.
If the weather’s not behaving, you’ll need some rainy-day options. Distract the kids with a visit to the cinema in Salzwedel (15 minutes) or learn more about Cold War history on a tour of the Swinmark Grenzlandmuseum Göhr (Swinmark Borderland Museum, 10 minutes), housed in an old border watchtower and displaying military uniforms and weaponry. And Lüchow (20 minutes) has the first museum in the world dedicated to The Rolling Stones, with displays of rare posters and tour T-shirts.
