Electric optional hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: This is very much a destination site, up at 600m, on the open fields of the Black Forest plateau. You drive an excellent new road up from the valleys, at 300m, to reach the site, which is just outside the small town of Neubulach. Only for keen cyclists.

So you get quiet - no road noise - and dark skies. Also walks into the forest start just a few minutes away.

Also a large swimming pool, which was plenty warm enough when we visited in August.

Very popular with local families, I've people who know the area and want to get away from it all.

Disliked: You do pay slightly higher fees than for some sites, but the quality and seclusion are worth it.

Whilst there is no shop on site, there is a good bar and restaurant, and Neubulach has a good supermarket, which you drive past as you approach the site. Closed Sundays.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: Emplacement was of good size. Toilets very clean. Office staff spoke good English and were very helpfull. Walking distance to large supermarket but uphill coming back required our e bikes.

Disliked: Payment for showers and use of electricity seemed a bit OTT as site costs were already high.

Local attractions

As well as the tennis and golf, horse riding, biking, cycling and fishing are all popular activities near Camping Erbenwald, as are fishing, birdwatching and foraging. The Northern Black Forest is a short drive away and has more activities among its mountains and tarns, including skiing and watersports. Or you could take the well-known and waymarked Schwarzwaldhochstrasse drive, stopping off frequently to snap scenic pics. No to this amount of action too? Camping Erbenwald is also close to the thermal baths of three spa resorts, and around a 45-minute drive from the Pforzheim Jewellery Museum, said to be the only public museum of its kind anywhere in the world. Head over here to check out more than 2000 glittering exhibits from around the globe and explore the history of goldsmiths and their work.
