  • Peaceful and family-friendly riverside site in the mountains
  • Walking and cycling routes starting directly from the grounds
  • Fishing, pool, playground, bouncy castle, snack bar and picnic tables
A riverside site in the mountains, with heaps to do for all ages, hiking and biking trails by the handful starting just outside the grounds, and a setting within simple day trip distance of splendid destinations such as Lyon and the Pilat Regional Natural Park… sound simply tiptop? Have a high-up stay in the Lyonnais mountains at Camping du Moulin, near the village of Chazelles-sur-Lyon in the Loire department of the Rhône-Alpes. But don't drive off into the surroundings just yet. For this peaceful and family-friendly place has been set up to have all ages sorted for leisurely pursuits: there's fishing steps away for starters, as the site is set on the banks of the Coise river, or you could amble over to the pool for swims and lazy drifts in the water and for sunbathing alongside. Kids have a big playground among the trees to get tuckered out at, along with a bouncy castle if your beady assessment is that they don't seem knackered enough for a full night's kip. And as well as all that? Challenge the family or continue to expend the kids' energy at the games room, pétanque court and ping pong – and do remember you're in the mountains if vast hikes are needed afterwards… Evening entertainment like karaoke and discos runs in summer. For foodie fuel, pick up takeaways and light bites at the snack bar to have there or at one of the plentiful picnic tables, or bag local produce, groceries and fresh daily bread at the site shop to have for the evening barbecue.

The campsite boasts a beautiful location and a super swimming pool, with some guests praising the showers and quiet atmosphere. Liked Nothing to like

Disliked I couldnt get into the campsite !

No-one was on-site to let me in. The entry barrier was down, no-one else seemed to be camping there, although there was a large dog which just wanted to keep barking at me.

I had to find alternative accomodation, as it was impossible to find anyone to enable me to enter the campsite even though I had arrived at a time when the campsite claimed the reception was open. It wasn't, it was closed.

This campsite is an absolute disgrace and should be removed from Pitchup.com

Don't bother going here !

Local attractions

Local town Chazelles-sur-Lyon is 40 minutes' drive from Saint-Étienne, the department capital set on the road connecting Toulouse with Lyon. Its Musée d'Art Moderne has one of the biggest collections of modern and contemporary art in the country; if the kids somehow won't go for that, take them down the mines at Saint-Étienne's mining museum, where they can take a tour below ground or check out the shows and films. Adventures of a different sort are at Saint-Martin-la-Plaine Zoo, also about 40 minutes' drive away, where your offspring can chatter with and excitedly wave to a nicely varied menagerie including gorillas, chimps, panthers, snakes and crocodiles. The park was set up to house animals from all the earth's continents, so small sorts should find a species or two among their faves to see. At least a day needs to be had in Lyon too, for its UNESCO World Heritage Site centre, many festivals, splendid restaurants and markets, and – this may interest tiny types – graffiti aplenty by the acclaimed Birdy Kids.
