Beaujolais for the red drinkers, Mâcon-Villages for those who prefer a white… you’re very firmly in wine-producing territory at Camping de la Chalaronne, with heaps of top-notch producers easily accessed from this handy location in the village of Saint-Didier-sur-Chalaronne. One could easily spend many a day pottering around the many local vineyards and producers, stopping for fine foodie foraging as you wend your way along the wine route. Such activity is not highly recommended for those travelling en famille, however, so those with nippers in tow will be chuffed to hear of plenty of family-friendly activities nearby too: an animal park, château trails and waterskiing should hopefully go some way towards keeping the smalls happy. Staying on site for a bit may well please the small sorts as well, with games of table tennis and pétanque to play, and assorted activities arranged for them in the summer months. Meanwhile, those who appreciate the joys of sitting quietly for a bit can take a rod to the Chalaronne river in search of carp, perch and catfish. Not been successful with catching your dinner? No matter – the site’s restaurant (open during high season only) serves up a range of tasty fare and sweet treats out on the terrace, and it’s only a few minutes’ amble into town for more restaurants, a supermarket and a bakery.

Liked Great little site, friendly staff.
We only stayed one night as a stop over.

Disliked On arrival no instructions were supplied to show where services were and staff were very unhelpful. When we eventually found the motorhome service point it was fithy and smelly so we refused to fill our tank in fear of contamination. We informed the ladies in the office who were not very interested so I got 20 euros refund and left.

Proper hardcore wine buffs can take in the whole of the 140-kilometre Beaujolais Wine Route for a more in-depth insight into the area’s offerings. Folks holidaying with the famille will no doubt wish to limit such endeavours and consider instead days out at Touroparc Zoo, 10 minutes’ drive from the site, or the excellent Bird Park half an hour away in Villars-les-Dommes. More adventurous types can have a go at waterskiing or wakeboarding in Mâcon, half an hour’s drive from the site.
