Some will know it as Lac Léman, others as Lake Geneva – either way, this huge body of water on the border of France and Switzerland is the biggest lake in the Alps, and a mighty scenic place to spend some holiday time. As the name suggests, Haute-Savoie site Camping Relais du Léman is in an excellent position to explore the lake and its surroundings – the shoreline is only about 800 metres away from this location on the edge of the village of Messery. The village centre is about 15 minutes’ walk away for a couple of restaurants and bakeries as well as a convenience store. That location means you’ll be able to explore the various corners of the lake easily enough, whether you want to wander around Geneva and Thonon-les-Bains (both about half an hour’s drive), visit the gorgeous medieval village of Yvoire (five minutes) or seek out one of the beach areas along the shore for sunbathing, swims and watersports. Don’t worry if you don’t fancy a lake swim, though – there’s a pool on site that’s available in all weathers thanks to the clever retractable roof. Playgrounds, pétanque and a snack bar are also on site, and there’s an entertainment programme that runs through the summer high season. Staying here means you’ll be on marked-out spacious 100 m2 pitches with flowers all around and plenty of shade from the trees. Facilities include wifi, a launderette, a washing-up area and a toilet/shower block.

Liked Overall, our experience was unfortunately disappointing. The campsite facilities felt rather outdated and, in general, not particularly well maintained.

The pitches around the campsite seemed fine overall, but the one initially assigned to us did not meet the conditions of our reservation. It was essentially half a pitch and was in poor condition. However, when we raised the issue, the receptionist was very understanding and quickly found a solution for us. We were very grateful for her help and professionalism.

Another disappointing point was the swimming pool. It is advertised as heated, but this was not the case during our stay, and unfortunately we also found it quite dirty.

While I appreciate the excellent assistance we received from the receptionist, considering the overall condition and maintenance of the facilities, I would not recommend this campsite in its current state.

Liked Facilities were maintained and clean

Disliked For us the pitch wasn’t private enough but having said that it made it very sociable. This to me would be better if you had kids as the pool was full and there was evening entertainment

Liked The location near the lake and pretty villages. The bar/restaurant staff were friendly

Disliked The campsite is not one I would ever stay at again.
Right from the start, there is very limited space to park and check-in at reception without obstructing the busy main road or blocking the entrance/exit.
The reception appears to have lots of staff but no organisation - chaotic is the word.
The sanitary facilities are disgusting: Dirty, unhygienic and seemingly rarely cleaned. There is and outer row of showers and toilets but the lights don't works effectively there are only 3 viable toilets and 5 or 6 showers. Dirt and cobwebs everywhere - some look as old as the building itself! The shower temperature can't be controlled and the water is scalding making them virtually unusable. We complained to the reception staff but they just shrugged it off.
The swimming pool is dirty with cloudy water - not appealing.
There are lots of staff riding around on golf buggies at dangerously high speeds. They seem to be having fun but what they do is a mystery.

Liked Staff were very nice and helpful. Pitch was a nice size.
Lots of different birds and saw some bats during the evening.

Disliked No shop on site and bar only open evenings. Nearest shop was 25 min walk.
Next time we’ll do our shopping before arriving.

Liked very clean and nicely spread out. lots of trees. bathroom area had tons of sinks for hand washing and dishes plus a separate area with sinks and mirrors. close to the city but still secluded.

Local attractions

No doubt you’ll start your stay by racing straight down to the lake shore – perhaps to take a swim from the beach in Messery (20 minutes’ walk). You can hire kayaks, paddleboards, pedalos and windsurfers down here too if you’d like to get out on the lake. Yvoire (five minutes’ drive) may well be your next port of call – and you’ll quickly see why this lakeside village has been classified as one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. There’s a classic castle to visit, along with remnants of the walls and gates that once surrounded the fortified village. It’s also worth taking a stroll through the Jardin des Cinq Sens, and/or following the two-kilometre walking and bike trail to Domaine de Rovorée before returning to the village for a restaurant meal. For other days out, you might like to visit the big birds at Les Aigles du Léman (15 minutes), ride the funicular from Thonon-les-Bains (half an hour) for spectacular lake views, or cross the border to Geneva (half an hour) to see the famed water fountain, stroll through the Old Town and climb the cathedral towers.
