  • Shaded pitches 10 minutes' walk from the Ardèche village of Bessas
  • A 25-minute drive to Vallon-Pont-d'Arc; 35 minutes to Païolive Wood
  • Outdoor pool, pétanque, playground and sociable activities on site
A holiday in the southern Ardèche is always a fine idea – this is an area packed with things to see and do, from adventurous hikes and canoe trips to leisurely days spent strolling through historic villages and their traditional markets. And it gets even better when you’re staying at Camping La Fontinelle, because this small site is within easy reach of all of the above. This site is an easy 10-minute walk from the little village of Bessas and about 10 minutes' drive from the shops and restaurants of Barjac. All sorts of top sights can be on your schedule here, including the Gorges de l’Ardèche, Païolive Wood and the Chauvet Cave, but you’ll also want to make sure you’ve factored in some time to spend on site. That might mean an afternoon by the pool, an evening with a couple of beers from the bar or checking out what’s on while you’re there – pétanque contests, dance evenings, karaoke and theme nights are often part of the menu, and there may be options for hikes or mountain bike outings. Simply seeking some downtime? That’s perfectly possible too – there’s plenty of space to relax on pitches shaded by oak and olive trees, with a library of books to borrow and a ping pong table for a little bit of gentle exercise when you require it. A playground and football pitch are also here to keep the kids busy while you have a well-earned nap. All the essentials are sorted too: the site has a toilet block, showers, a launderette and a food shop (handy, given that you’ll be allowed to bring a barbecue along for your meals…)

What customers say

This family-run campsite offers a warm welcome and a peaceful atmosphere. Reviewers highlighted the lovely pool area with great views and a bar, and praised the helpful staff, with one speaking good English. Fresh bread is available to order. While the location is excellent for exploring local attractions, the toilet and shower facilities require attention, with guests noting a lack of lighting, cold water, and missing amenities. Access for caravans and the site exit path were also highlighted as challenging.

Electric optional grass and gravel pitch

Liked We were greeted warmly by Celia who said we could choose any pitch out of 12 available. In fact, we were the only people on the campsite for the duration of our stay. This meant we had loads of privacy and peace.
The pitch we chose was good, but was the only one easily accessible with a caravan- motor homes would have found terrain less difficult. Also the path to exit the site was steep, with a large dip in it that we had to scrape gravel in to make our exit easier. Not ideal.
The pool area was lovely, great views and a bar area to have drinks/food or just relax on out of the heat.
The toilet/ shower block needed attention: there were no lights at night, cold water only, no loo seats, loo roll or any evidence of cleaning. Easily the least cared for toilet block we visited of all sites we were at on our holiday.
The location is great for visiting Vallon Pont D’arc and the gorges, but the nearest village of Bessas took us easily 20 mins to walk to and we were disappointed to find no cafe/ bar or anything open at all.

Disliked Toilet Block, difficult access for caravan.

Local attractions

Hikers, you’ll have plenty to keep you busy for days around here, with walks through the stunning scenery of Païolive Wood (35 minutes’ drive), Sautadet Falls (35 minutes) and Gorges Chassezac (an hour). For a different way to see some of your surroundings, hire canoes in Vallon-Pont-d’Arc (25 minutes) to paddle your way to the huge stone arch in the river, or head up into the treetops at Accrobranche Adventure Camp (20 minutes). Enough of all the activity? Try a more sedate ride on the Cévennes steam train (an hour) or take a wander around some of the pretty villages nearby, such as Aiguèze (half an hour), Labeaume (35 minutes) or Balazuc (40 minutes). Make time to stop at Grotte Chauvet 2 (half an hour) as well to see replicas of prehistoric art. If you’re staying a little longer you may also like to consider day trips to places like Avignon and Nîmes (both an hour and a quarter) or a tour of the wildlife-packed Camargue Regional Natural Park (an hour and 45 minutes).
