  • Peaceful touring site set amid Côtes du Rhône vineyards in Vaucluse
  • Séguret and Gigondas 10 minutes’ drive; Vaison-la-Romaine 20 minutes
  • Mont Ventoux and Dentelles de Montmirail views; wine tasting available
If you’re intent on touring the Côtes du Rhône and Rasteau wine-making regions of Vaucluse, there’s no better place to stop overnight than Domaine de La Girardière, five minutes’ drive from the wine-producing village of Rasteau. The campervan pitches are set among 20 hectares of vines – and if you thought things couldn’t be better, they can – the site also has views over spectacular Mont Ventoux and the Dentelles de Montmirail. This traditional family-run wine estate was founded in 1979; the vineyard produces and sells Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) wines, and site guests are welcome to take cellar tours and join in tastings of the reds, whites and rosés on request. The roster of facilities at Domaine de La Girardière is short: namely a clutch of spacious, off-grid pitches with stone picnic tables and benches from which to take in the vineyard and mountain views. There are no showers or running water, so your van needs to be self-sufficient. Dogs are welcome on site, and you can exercise them among the serried ranks of vines.

Local attractions

If you are a real wine buff, there are several vineyards in the vicinity; you can continue your discovery of the region’s stellar wines on foot at Domaine la Soumade (10 minutes’ walk) and Domaine Gourt de Mautens Jérôme Bressy (40 minutes). For a taste of café life, head for the village of Gigondas (10 minutes’ drive), sitting at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail and packed with wine bars and tasting rooms. Beaumes-de-Venise (15 minutes) has wine cellars where you can taste the region’s renowned fortified Muscat Doux. But there’s plenty more to see in Vaucluse other than wineries. It would be a shame to miss out on a visit to Vaison-la-Romaine (20 minutes), bisected by the River Ouvèze and with origins in ancient Roman times – you can wander around historic ruins in the town centre. The medieval village of Séguret (10 minutes) clings precariously to a hillside and has exceptional views over the Rhône Valley as well as several shops selling santons – nativity figures and cheeky representations of Provençal characters.
