  • Family-friendly site five minutes’ stroll from Saint-Rémy-de-Provence
  • Avignon and the Camargue Regional Natural Park half an hour’s drive
  • Tree-shaded pitches with a swimming pool, pétanque and ping pong
Set amid pine forests and Mediterranean scrub in the rugged foothills of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, Camping Pegomas is a mere five minutes’ walk from the historic town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. This leafy and peaceful spot has spacious pitches shaded by trees – great for those whose main plan is simply to chill out. It’s also just minutes away from hikes, cycle rides, horse riding and sightseeing in the Alpilles Regional Natural Park, so active types are well served too. On-site, everything is designed for relaxation and recreation. There are shaded gardens in which to unwind, a swimming pool to cool off in, playgrounds, pétanque and ping-pong tables… Pretty much all you need to spend quality time with the family and keep everyone happy and entertained. Camping Pegomas is also about convenience. Chez Titi is the on-site licensed bar, supplying a constant top-up of ice cream and regional wines or beers, while visiting food trucks serve pizza and pasta dishes, burgers or kebabs. You can also order fresh breakfast pastries the evening before you need them. Alternatively, you might want to hunt down bistros, crêperies and pavement cafés in the winding streets of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, or stock up on fresh produce at the Provençal market on Wednesday morning.

Local attractions

You might have seen immersive art shows before, but those at Carrières des Lumières (15 minutes’ drive) also stand out for the rather unusual and impressive setting: here, colourful artworks by the likes of Van Gogh, Picasso and Monet are projected against the limestone walls of a former quarry. Avignon (half an hour) is known for the Palais des Papes, which several 14th-century pontiffs chose as their residence instead of the Vatican. There are archaeological artefacts at Musée Calvet, or you might want to walk halfway across the Rhône on the stone ruins of the Saint-Bénezet Bridge (better known as the Bridge of Avignon). The Camargue Regional Natural Park (half an hour), an area of wetlands and salt marshes at the delta of the Rhône, is home to pink flamingos, which you can admire from several observation points on the shores of the Étang de Vaccarès lake. The area is also known for its herds of free-roaming white horses.
