  • Peaceful pitches in a walled garden near Caunay in the Deux-Sevres
  • La Vallée des Singes 25 minutes’ drive and Futuroscope 50 minutes
  • Pitch fees can be exchanged for on-site bar and restaurant vouchers
When you’re looking for an overnight stop within 15 minutes’ drive of the N10 motorway around Chaunay in Nouvelle Aquitaine’s Deux-Sevres department, have a look at Mad Hatters Camping. This small and friendly site five minutes’ drive from the village of Caunay is camping at its most simple: bring in everything that you need, as the pitches don’t include electricity, water connections, showers or loos. The trade-off for this is spacious grass pitches in a centuries-old walled garden, within mere steps of a lively restaurant and bar. The big selling point is that your pitch fee is returned to you as vouchers to spend on food and drinks during your stay (please note these are food-and-drink credits and cannot be exchanged for cash or refunded if not used). So set up in the peaceful garden, use your vouchers to enjoy a meal or a few drinks without needing to drive, and then retire to your accommodation for a sound night’s sleep in rural surroundings. All you need to do after a long road trip is find a table on the terrace and relax with a drink from Hatters Bar. Depending on opening times, you can also order food from Mad Hatters Kitchen – advance table reservations are recommended, and if you’d like breakfast you’ll need to order that the night before. Social events like quiz nights, themed meals and barbecues are also held throughout the year.

Local attractions

If the kids are with you, it’s a dead cert that you’ll be heading for La Vallée des Singes (25 minutes’ drive), where you can spot gorillas, chimps and bonobos while walking through the park or watch the scheduled feeding sessions. If that’s not enough for the animal-lovers among you, then Zoodyssée (45 minutes) will enthral you all with bears and big cats roaming freely in vast shaded enclosures. Another big family attraction in the region is Futuroscope (50 minutes), combining thrill rides, immersive 4D shows and futuristic technology with slides and wave pools at Aquascope waterpark. It’s a two-hour drive to Puy du Fou, but well worth a long day out to watch the spectacular themed shows; book tickets well ahead of time and stay late to see the evening performances on the lake. When you’re keen to explore unspoilt countryside, head to the Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park (45 minutes) – nicknamed the ‘Green Venice of France’ for good reasons. You can traverse its marshes and canals in traditional flat-bottomed boats, take walks beside the Sèvre Niortaise River or follow cycling trails from the village of Coulon (an hour), a popular starting point for exploring the protected wetlands.
