‘A place that takes care of you while you take care of it’ is how owner Pierre-Olivier describes the setup at Ecophora – and that’s a lovely way to sum up this Poitou-Charentes site, which is designed to protect the environment while also providing a fabulous nature-filled experience for guests.
This peaceful place is at the end of a cul-de-sac about five minutes’ drive from Saint-Pardoux-Soutiers, and it’s a rather gorgeous place in which to relax: the pitching meadow is centred around a grand old oak tree and has a pond populated with frogs and carp. And perhaps the best feature of all is the thriving orchard, providing the materials for the homemade artisanal cider that you can sample while you’re here.
The campsite is part of an eco centre that organises workshops focusing on things like carpentry, holistic medicine and yurt manufacture – guests are welcome to sign up for these sessions or just chat to the owner about a few ideas. Alternatively you can spend your time here simply strolling along the paths around the centre, reading in the shade of the oak tree and looking out for wildlife. After dark, join fellow guests at the campfire area and take advantage of the low light pollution to look up into the starry skies.
To keep the environmental footprint minimal, facilities at this site are fairly simple, but you’ll have access to a hot shower and compost toilets as well as a shelter with dining tables and benches.

Route directions
When you reach the hamlet of La Bourichère, continue to the end of the road, then turn right onto the grassy path. Pass between a barn and some small outbuildings. The car park is just beyond, on your right.

Local attractions
Getting out on foot is a lovely way to explore, and you can start easily enough by heading out on the two-kilometre trail from the site to a thousand-year-old oak tree – a wonderful place for a contemplative wander. There are several more excellent walking trails running through the local landscapes (ask on site for top tips), and both the Vélidéale and Vélo Francette pass through Saint-Pardoux-Soutiers for those of you travelling on two wheels.
The pretty town of Parthenay (20 minutes’ drive) is a really lovely place for a stroll as well – the medieval town is full of cobbled streets, half-timbered houses, cute cafés and sights like the Ancien Chateau du Parthenay. Heading the other way, you’ll get to the Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park (40 minutes), where you can take a boat trip or canoe outing through the area known as the ‘Green Venice’.
If you’ve got the kids with you, you may like to treat them to a big day out at Puy du Fou or Futuroscope – both are among France’s top attractions and around an hour’s drive from the site.
