  • Well-equipped site in Saint-Georges-de-Didonne, on the Gironde estuary
  • Saint-Georges-de-Didonne beach five minutes’ drive; Jonzac 50 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; outdoor pool; playground; cycle hire; breakfast pastries
Looking for a beach holiday where you can relax on golden sands lapped by the calm waters of a blue sea? Then Camping Bleu Mer might be the place for you. This peaceful, family-friendly site (open from early April to early October) sits on the outskirts of Saint-Georges-de-Didonne, a pleasant resort at the mouth of the Gironde estuary. It’s a five-minute drive to the town centre, with its shops, restaurants and splendid beaches, including the vast expanse of sand named after the town and, beyond the headland topped by a distinctive lighthouse, Plage Royan. Being west-facing, both beaches are also top spots for sunset viewing, maybe with a glass of fine Bordeaux wine in hand… When the sea is too rough, the kids can still splash around in the safety of the on-site heated pool; if grown-ups want to unwind, too, there are sun loungers; more active types might have a go at the fitness equipment around the pool, or hire a bike to explore the surrounding area. And that’s not all owners Aurore and Patrick have arranged on site: there are also a pétanque court and a playground; a morning delivery of bread and flaky pastries; a snack bar and an off licence; plus amenities such as a launderette, a drying room and a toilet/shower block with facilities for disabled guests. You could say they have thought of everything – and yes, that includes your four-legged companion, who is a welcome guest here.

Local attractions

If the kids are into creepy-crawlies, they might think they’ve hit the jackpot with a visit to Planet Exotica (10 minutes’ drive). However, there are many more animals here besides spiders, insects, assorted invertebrates and reptiles. Head to the monkey enclosure, or take a detour to the farm to pet friendly goats and alpacas. Fitting snugly in a deep bend of the river Charente, Rochefort (45 minutes) has a large lagoon area that’s popular with birdwatchers, who come here to spot ducks, grebes and terns. The nearby Musée de l'Aéronautique Navale displays aircraft, engines and turbines in a hangar dating from the 1920s. Jonzac (50 minutes) is renowned for its medieval castle, which was later refurbished into an elegant Renaissance palace. On the outskirts of town, Les Antilles de Jonzac is a large water park (with added beauty treatments for parents in need of a little ‘me time’), and there’s a horse-riding centre nearby, too.
