- Family campsite 10 minutes’ drive from the beach on the Île d’Oléron
- A 15-minute drive to Le Château d’Oléron, 10 minutes to La Cotinière
- Swimming pool and playground; terrace bar and themed evenings
Cosy, informal and welcoming are just three of the adjectives used to describe L’Orée des Bois, a chilled family-friendly campsite bang in the middle of the Île d’Oléron, just off the Atlantic coastline in the Charente-Maritime.
So what’s available at this little find on the edge of a forest? Well, pitches under the shade of mature trees for starters, and if you’re looking to get active with the kids, there’s an outdoor pool for splashing around, a boulodrome and a play area for younger offspring.
On the entertainment front, there are themed evenings and parties in high season, and when it comes to food and drink, the licensed café-bar (with TV for big sports events) covers those bases with all-day snacks. A grocery store means you never need to worry about running short on food, and if you need anything else, Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron (10 minutes’ drive) has plenty of shops as well as bike hire if you want to explore the local area.
Speaking of the local area, there’s plenty to see and do in the vicinity as well, from lolling on sandy beaches to enjoying langoustine suppers overlooking the fishing harbour in cutesy La Cotinière (both 10 minutes’ drive).

Local attractions
Pretty much flat and criss-crossed by bike paths, the Île d’Oléron is something of a cinch for cyclists. Routes lead through pine forest, across salt marshes and past vineyards to the island’s famous oyster shacks. A circular, all-day ride suitable for kids begins and ends in Dolus d’Oléron (10 minutes) and takes in sleepy Saint-Trojan-les-Bains (20 minutes) and Le Château d’Oléron (15 minutes).
Stay awhile in Le Château d’Oléron to have a nose around the ruins of its once-mighty citadel, and as it’s the renowned capital of Marennes-Oléron oyster production, taste the local delicacy in one of its many cafés.
Fancy getting out on the water? Then take a boat cruise out to Fort Boyard, built off-shore to defend the region in Napoleonic times, from Boyardville (15 minutes). To explore further afield on the mainland, take the Viaduc de l’Île d’Oléron (20 minutes) to historic La Rochelle (an hour and 20 minutes) to walk the medieval ramparts, surf off its beaches and meet creatures of the deep at Aquarium La Rochelle.
