In Saint-Clément-des-Baleines, at the westernmost tip of the gorgeous Île de Ré, Camping La Côte Sauvage occupies 18 acres of land covered with pine trees and holm oaks. This is the place for those who can’t get enough of spectacular sunsets over the sea and long days on sandy beaches lapped by the Atlantic Ocean (the site has two direct access points to the beach), and for birding enthusiasts (the Lilleau des Niges reserve, which sits on a major migratory route, is 10 minutes’ drive away). The site, with electric grass pitches, is also a big hit with families because of its child-friendly amenities, including a playground and a kids’ club with games and crafting sessions (for visitors aged 4 to 12). There are plenty of activities to engage the whole family, too – from pétanque and volleyball courts to table football and ping pong, plus evening entertainment. If you’d like to adopt Île de Ré’s favourite mode of transport, there are bikes for hire. It’s a 10-minute ride to the Phare des Baleines lighthouse (where a climb of 257 steps leads to spectacular views of the Bay of Biscay); to the village of Ars-en-Ré, with its fishermen’s cottages and pretty marina; and to the Conche of Whales, a huge forest-fringed beach that’s popular for watersports. If you’re into fishing (or at least sea foraging), you might want to explore Saint-Clément’s rocky coast at low tide, when it yields wild oysters and periwinkles.

Set the bar high for my first camping trip

Disliked Timer on the WC and wash sink lighting was a bit short and impractical at times, but I understand it's eco friendly

Liked The snack bar and games for the kids were lovely. Good position near a little village with a market and lighthouse nearby.

Disliked There were hundreds of pitches squeezed in anywhere, a bit of menovering to be able to get the cable to reach the electric point that was servicing 6 pitches, just reached. Only two toilets for several pitches around us. It's in the beachfront but we cycled to a different beach up the road that was much nicer, less stoney.

Liked Great, chilled atmosphere and really lovely layout of the site. Pitch was spacious and shady. Fun activities for kids to do and really enjoyed the entertainment in the evenings. Staff were friendly and helpful.

The Ecomuseum Marais Salant (15 minutes’ drive) delves into the history of salt production going all the way back to the Neolithic period. It’s possible to take guided tours of the marshes, spotting winged visitors such as geese and egrets (in season), plus salt-tolerant plant life like samphire and mustard. Drive along the northern coast of the Île de Ré, stopping at Saint-Martin-de-Ré (20 minutes) for a drink at the marina, followed by a walk on the defensive walls of the Citadelle Vauban, built by Louis XIV’s military architect in the 1680s. Then it’s on to the town of La Flotte and the ruins of the Abbaye des Châteliers (half an hour). Cross the Pont de l’Île de Ré and head into La Rochelle (50 minutes) for a look at the imposing towers guarding the entrance to its port and a visit to the Bunker La Rochelle (Museum), which served as the headquarters of German submarine officers during World War II.
