What a cracking coastal spot this is – if you’re the sort that seeks out lots of seaside days on holiday, you’ve found a great base at Camping La Garenne. The jaunt to the nearest beach from this Port-des-Barques site involves simply nipping across the road, and you’ll also be within easy reach of lots more Charente-Maritime faves, including Royan, La Rochelle and Oléron island. Pile on top of that coastal hikes, watersports, boat trips, museums, an aquarium and a zoo (and more beaches, bien sûr), and you’ll note that it’s a wise move to plump for as lengthy a stay as possible at this place. And it’s an equally wise move to factor in a bit of flopping-out time between your days out (all those fun times can get terribly tiring…) Poolside is probably the place to be for that – there are plenty of loungers gathered on the sun terrace for sunbathing between swims, and supervising the small sorts as they splash in the paddling pool. Pétanque courts and a playground also take care of times when you’d rather stay dry. Scheduling a bit of time for dining is a fine plan too – wander up to the village centre in 15 minutes for restaurants and bakeries or sort supplies at the supermarket 10 minutes’ drive away in Soubise.

Liked Prachtige locatie, zwembad is koud maar wel leuk. Kampeerplaatsen zijn vrij ruim en veel opties met schaduw.

Disliked Sanitair. Een aantal sanitaire blokken was buiten gebruik (al geruime tijd) en degenen die wel in gebruik waren zijn echt wel verouderd (slecht sluitende deuren etc), waardoor er veel te weinig toiletten waren voor het aantal kampeerders.

Au village : à faire le marché gourmand et manger chez Catherine pizzeria … 2 femmes locales super sympas et très souriantes.

Disliked - Camping vieillot.
- Il faut aimer les douches glaciales et brûlantes en 2 secondes.
- Pas d’affichages sur les activités proposées au village (fête gourmande, marché nocturne …)
- Responsable du camping pas aimable qui ne fait pas vivre le camping ni le village et prétextant ne pas connaître les animations du village… on sent bien qu’elle ne doit pas avoir de bonne relation avec le village … DOMMAGE pour les gens du camping.
- Wc pas très propre.
- pas de supérette dans le camping (même pour du dépannage)

Merci d’avoir pris le temps de souligner que nos emplacements sont spacieux, que notre piscine est agréable et que le village regorge de bonnes adresses.

Pour le reste :
Les douches ne passent pas de glaciales à brûlantes en 2 secondes : c’est soit l’un, soit l’autre. Dans votre cas, il s’agit d’un dysfonctionnement ponctuel sur un seul bloc sanitaire. Nous disposons de deux autres grands blocs sanitaires à proximité, parfaitement fonctionnels.

Les animations du village : nous avons les flyers des animations et des marchés nocturnes à l’accueil. En revanche, nous ne pouvons pas connaître les événements dont nous n’avons pas connaissance.

Les sanitaires : ils sont nettoyés plusieurs fois par jour, mais ils ne se salissent pas tout seuls…

Concernant la supérette, nous disposons d’un coin épicerie avec tout le nécessaire pour dépanner nos vacanciers. Il suffisait simplement de tourner un peu la tête… mais visiblement, c’était déjà trop d'efforts. Et ce, sans compter les commerces de proximité situés à 1.2km pour les plus courageux.

Quant à votre remarque insinuant que je n’aurais "pas de bonne relation avec le village"… Je laisse ce genre de suppositions à ceux qui préfèrent inventer des histoires plutôt que de vérifier les faits.

Disliked Paid for electric couldn’t reach the electric box as it was 2 far away complained asked for my money back as I couldn’t use it and refused to give it back, very dated nothing around to get food.

Liked We were able to choose our own pitch which was level, close to water and electric. The showers were nice and hot but could do with updating. The swimming pool was good and overall a very relaxing site. Walked to the Ile de Madame which was lovely.

Disliked Really no beach to swim from when the tide was out which goes out to way past the Ile de Madame which is a long way. We did find a sea water pool just around the coast which would have been great if it was identified the advertising for the site or on site.

Local attractions

If you’ve brought bikes, take them over to Oléron island. There’s a fab network of cycle paths over here, linking villages, beaches and salt marshes, and they’re generally mercifully flat and quiet. It’ll take around 45 minutes to drive there; for an island escape closer to home, wander over to L’Isle Madame in half an hour. Sealife enthusiasts have much more to see than just beaches around here: La Corderie Royale in Rochefort (25 minutes’ drive) now houses the International Centre of the Sea, and you can board the old boat Hermione for a taste of life at sea. Should your interests lie more in life beneath the waves, take the 45-minute drive to the aquarium in La Rochelle, where more than 12,000 aquatic animals dwell in the tanks. To see landlubbing creatures instead, set off for a similar length of journey south to Zoo de la Palmyre, set across a splendid 18 hectares of pine forest.

A valid vaccination certificate must accompany your dog.
Dogs are prohibited from main facilities and amenities.
