  • Family site five minutes’ drive from Barzan on the Gironde estuary
  • Plage de l’Arnèche 15 minutes’ drive; Zoo La Palmyre 35 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; bar serving Bordeaux wines; outdoor swimming pool
If you like your wines, you may well jump at the chance to stay at Camping Le Bellevue, a small family-run site right on the Gironde estuary in Charente-Maritime. This is the place to recharge your batteries with spectacular views of the glittering river as it reaches the Atlantic in a designated marine nature park populated by assorted birdlife and dolphins. The site is five minutes’ drive from the villages of Barzan and Talmont-sur-Gironde, and there are several restaurants serving oysters – a local delicacy – within a two-kilometre radius. But before you explore the region, it’s worth familiarising yourself with what the site has to offer: an outdoor pool with sun loungers for starters, plus a pétanque court for family tournaments and a bar where you can sample those famed Bordeaux wines. Owners Ingrid and Vincent have also thought of the kids, so their site comes with a play area, ping-pong tables and plenty of books and board games with which to while away a few hours, especially if the weather takes a turn. Dogs are welcome too, and your four-legged companion will no doubt enjoy exploring the numerous hiking trails that start right from the pitches.

Local attractions

Chances are you’ll look forward to chilling on the quiet Barzan river beach (10 minutes’ walk) or Plage de Suzac (10 minutes’ drive). Just north of the site, the estuary is lined with sandy beaches such as Plage des Nonnes and Plage de l’Arnèche (both 15 minutes), popular for swimming, rockpooling and watching the sunset. Try to sneak some history into your itinerary with a visit to the Museum Gallo-Roman site at Le Fâ (five minutes) to see the rough outline of the old settlement and archaeological finds in the museum. If that doesn’t cause too much moaning among your brood, Citadelle de Blaye (an hour) is an impressive waterfront fortress designed by Vauban; its ramparts and former barracks are free to explore. After that, the kids might appreciate a trip to Zoo La Palmyre (35 minutes) to feed the elephants and giraffes, watch the penguin shows and see big cats. If wildlife-spotting sparks their interest, head for Terres d’Oiseaux nature reserve (50 minutes) to catch sight of egrets or herons. Your offspring will probably also love the whimsical dioramas in the Grottes du Régulus, carved deep into the sea cliffs at Meschers-sur-Gironde (10 minutes).
