Reception and shop

  • Small, relaxed site on a Picardy farm outside Saint-Léger-en-Bray
  • A 10-minute drive to Beauvais; five minutes to Parc Saint-Paul
  • Shop on site with produce from the farm's pigs and fruit trees
Fancy the kind of rural Picardy break where the resident pigs outnumber the visiting people? Pick a pitch at Camping La Ferme du Moulin, just outside the village of Saint-Léger-en-Bray. Here owner Guillaume runs a small site that’s part of a mixed farm growing organic fruit and raising free-range pigs who lead a happy life rootling around in seven acres of oak woodland and five acres of meadow. The happy free-range lifestyle extends to the site’s guests – numbers are kept on the low side here to ensure there’s plenty of space for everyone to relax and soak up the fresh air. It’s all about ‘slow tourism’ here so get set for local walks, days spent pottering around nearby villages and evenings spent by your barbecue or campfire, ideally while sampling some of the farm’s produce (including pâtés, rillettes, jams and juices). In keeping with that slow-life ethos, the facilities here have been kept on the minimal side – you won’t find swimming pools and organised activities here but all the essentials are in place, including wifi, picnic tables, showers and compost toilets. Families are very welcome but the free-roaming resident animals mean that dogs can’t be accepted. All of this sounds like it could be in the middle of nowhere, right? But while it’s definitely got the vibe of a very remote location, this site is actually a handy 10-minute drive from Beauvais and around an hour and a half from Paris (potentially making this a great choice for a few days’ easy escape from city life).

Local attractions

Getting out to explore the Oise region is easy from this site – there are several hiking and walking trails in the surrounding area, and the farm is well placed for the Avenue Verte London to Paris cycling route. Close by you can also stroll to Saint-Léger Leisure Park in a few minutes to see the animals, or take a five-minute drive/20-minute bike ride to the rollercoasters and riverboat rides of Parc Saint-Paul. Arty or gardening types will also want to stop by to see the paintings and plants at Jardin du peintre André van Beek (five minutes’ drive). The lovely Les Jardins Henri Le Sidaner (35 minutes) is also worth a visit, as are Château De Troissereux (15 minutes) for heritage buffs and the Musée de l’Aviation (10 minutes) for aeroplane fans and those interested in 20th-century military history. You’ll certainly want to spend some time in Beauvais (10 minutes) as well, visiting the huge unfinished Gothic cathedral with its astronomical clock, admiring the art at MUDO - Oise Museum and Le Quadrilatère, and simply strolling through the historic streets and squares.
