  • Well-appointed lodges 20 minutes’ drive from Les Sables d’Olonne
  • Le Grand Défi 20 minutes' drive away; Puy du Fou an hour
  • Fishing pond on site; picnic baskets and breakfasts to order
A 10-minute drive from the salt marshes of L'Île-d'Olonne and only a little farther (15 minutes) from the beaches of the Bay of Biscay, Damona Lodges is part of the 50-hectare Chausserie estate, a lushly verdant corner of the Vendée countryside. The lodges in question are excellently appointed, and each one has its own distinct character that's reflected in the decor. What they all have in common is a decked outside area for alfresco family meals, which you can prepare from scratch with the products available at the on-site shop. Better yet, you might want to order a picnic basket, packed with local delicacies served in sealed jars. Breakfast (including buttery viennoiserie, freshly baked bread, jams, yogurt and juices) can also be arranged. There are more luxury touches in the bathrooms, with a welcome kit (soap, shampoo, shower gel and body cream) and fluffy towels; bed linen is also provided (indeed, your bed will already be made ahead of your arrival). As befits a place named after the Celtic goddess of waterways, there are a couple of nearby streams, including the river Auzance, plus ponds where guests can fish for bass and carp. Other activities in the local area include horse riding (with two stables within a 10-minute drive), golf (15 minutes) and all sorts of watersports, walks and bike rides along the coast.

Local attractions

The salt marshes of L’Île-d'Olonne (10 minutes' drive) make an excellent place to explore – walk along the waterside pathways here to see the salt workers in action, then stop in at the museum for more of an explanation of the process. Just on the edge of Les Sables d’Olonne is Musée des Traditions Populaires (15 minutes), where you can find out a bit more about some of the local products and crafts. Carry on into Les Sables d’Olonne (20 minutes) for some time on the beach, a visit to the Zoo des Sables and a wander around L'île Penotte, a neighbourhood where the houses are adorned with shell mosaics. There are plenty of options for watersports and boat trips here as well. For family outings, get some speed up at Circuit Mecamax - Karting & Quad (10 minutes), try all the activities at Dunes Park (10 minutes) or check out all the tiny models at Vendée Miniature (15 minutes). You may also like to fit in a full day out at Le Grand Défi amusement and water park (20 minutes) or Puy du Fou (an hour).
